| In the year 1972 when the Indian government gave orders to a contractor to cut down some trees and use them for making furniture, certain village women near the himalayas devised and innovative plan to ward off the coming threat to the trees. They all gathered in the forest and each one of them gave a tight hug to a tree! As they were clinging to the trees, the contractor could not cut down a single tree. This was known as the famous chipko andolan meaning hug to a tree movement and till date is a very famous tool adopted by nature lovers across the nation to kill the motives of tree cutters. Goes to show that if you really have the will...nothing can stop you from doing what you want even if it means fighting someone much more powerful than you...in this case the Indian government aided contractor... |

| Well that's where the term tree hugger came from, I didn't know that. Found the Wiki article on it. Chipko movement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

| I also found out that the women who hug to the trees were not actually against the cutting of the trees...it was more for their use that they wanted the trees to be saved. I mean they lived near the forset and thus used the timber from the trees for their household purposes. Whereas the contractor would have cut all the trees at one shot and there would have been nnothing left. Like the story of the hen with the golden egg. The women wanted an egg everyday while the contractor wanted all the eggs at once by cutting them dowwn! |
