Just a thread and poll to see how others handle dead, dangerous or badly decayed trees, also share ideas with others on how you would do it.

Well, it depends on many factors including access, so it's hard to tick any particular bax.

Any of the above, every tree is a unique challenge, there is no one rule to it. But if you were local i'd give you $100 to do all the dodgy ones! |

i would say that use a mewp every time but every tree is different every situation different but go for the safest way everytime, however last week i dismantled a seriously dodgy tree at the bottom of a garden over a neighbours house with no access for anything, the boss got me to look at it first then asked if i wanted to do it, i thought long and hard about it went through many senarios then climbed it and assessed as i went, slow and easy the whole time, when i got it to the floor i was more tired than i have every been, i was so on edge the whole climb i had been tensed up from my fingers to my toes, i slept heavy for eight hours for two days and if you know me i dont sleep more than 4 hours at a time.it was that big it took three men 8 hours to get it out to the truck. climb safe G

Since it's hard to say for such a dynamic question, I voted for everything EXCEPT giving NG $100 to do it. |

There's a few I've seen that I've driven on past but when someone calls me I usually stick a big fat number on them an hope they don't come through. If they do and I can't get equipment to them with no other trees around I guy them all the way up and use the dynamic rope tie in as discussed in the dead tree challenge. There's been a few that have kept me awake thinking about a better way to do them. Also prayer helps.....

I like the idea of tip tying , using another tree as a crane , or my favorite the bucket truck. I very seldom run into trees that can't be removed using conventional methods. We had a guy recently killed when he hitched the top out of a dead pine and snapped the tree at the base and was killed when the tree crushed him... I recently left a estimate where there was a live white oak tree that had heavy damage at the root flare, there was no access with the truck and it stood alone.. The homeowner didn't want to pay to have the tree removed safely so I left.

| Heroes don't last long. I go with caution, knowledge and planning instead. I don't go up a tree unless I'm bloody sure I'm coming back down it alive and well.

There are dangerous trees I've done (tree blown over and hanging, rotten whatever) or will try. Some trees I just refuse to touch. There is a Euc at my parent's place for example. 25m, dead for about 15yrs and you can see the honeycombed termite eaten rotten wood where the bark has fallen away. It's got other trees around it, will make a mess of the garden when it comes down, but there is no way on God's green Earth that I am going near the thing with a chainsaw! I'm removing some other dead trees for them, but I won't touch that one. |

quote it good, slow and steady lowering smaller pieces than usual.had one recently, spike fully sank into trunk about 3m up it was like a sponge, went up another 6m to top it,a bit nerve rakking.dead rotten trees are weaker but load from limbs are lighter,it helps if your 75kg ringing wet. |

Well depends on condition of tree, access, availability of others trees to tie into. My boss lets me know in advance of a dangerous tree that has to be removed, i assess it for climbing, if i can't climb, we use cherry picker. If no access for chery picker we use alternate ways like scaffollding. Seem to be removing more dead trees lately, especially evergreen alders and silver birches, and quite a few dead gum trees. |
