Uniforms are a confidence factor that clients look for, and when all your crew has a uniform appearance, like yellow, the client see that as a positive. It's good for business!

Why do a lot of people still prefer wearing short sleeves (hi-vis or not) when doing tree work?

Three separate companies that I contract for have a short sleeve uniform that I will only wear over the top of my own long sleeve hi-vis if it's cold. Otherwise I'm wearing long sleeves only.

For me, the no. 1 reason is protection from abrasions/scratches followed by protection from the sun. My nearly translucent skin burns in minutes. I'd rather be a bit hotter than have to lather on even more sunscreen. When you're already wearing a helmet, chainsaw pants, boots and dragging a chainsaw up a tree I doubt the short sleeves make you that much cooler - maybe psychologically.

If wearing short sleeves minimises the chances of being dragged into a chipper than why not wear a singlet or go topless (or come out of the tree and sharpen your big saw while the groundies finish off the chipping )

Anyway, it's drizzling outside so I need to find that rain jacket...

Long sleeve all the way, got the best of both worlds, roll em up or button them down. Learned my lesson a few years ago with singlets, skin cancer alone scares the crap out of me, it worries me that even thou I take steps to cover up these days I might still pay for the past indiscretions.

Cheers

Such is life, hindsight is always 20/20,dont beat yourself up over it cause if the sin is done your got no choice but to live it out... I wear long sleeve high vis because it is in our OHS policy but they are rolled up and down for convenience. Hi vis all the way every one is much easier to see.

Tony, and all of us working outdoors, THE #1 thing around skin cancer in my opinion is REGULAR skin checks. Slip, slop, slap etc is all well and good for prevention. However, we have all had exposure in the past that could be the catalyst for skin cancer. Remember being burnt to a crisp as a kid???

Skin checks found a suss mole that turned out to be stage 2 melanoma in my wife. Removed a scotch fillet steak sized piece from her back quickly and with 3 monthly checks since she has been cancer free for 2 years now.

Without early detection and action she would likely not still be here.

I urge anyone to get checked, don't ignore it, you're not too busy, and the stupidest excuse i've heard is "What if they find something"!

Jim Stynes tried the ignore it approach and it didn't work out that well for him.

If you work outdoors, have ever been badly sunburnt or had a solarium, get checked.

I think hi-viz is a necessity these days for all the uni bred 'tards out there.
I have had them walk straight into bollards, drive over witches hats and drag them down the road, walk thru tape etc. I dont wear viz on private jobs but if in a public area/roadway/footpath etc. definitely.
At least it covers your butt, also it helps bosses catch the workers bludging.

Lol what, the worst I've seen for people walking into things was a guy walked into a witches hat. I have seen an unknown number of people completely ignore things like traffic control to drive into a site, park directly under a climber and proceed to ask us for if he could have firewood. Another one that stands out is a guy walking directly under my polesaw as I'm cutting a branch over a footpath, the second he slowly walked passed the branch came down. A lot of people are oblivious to the dangers our industry poses to them and their idiocy.

I'm glad I'm not the only one lol!

I made the mistake of doing a job on Portrush Rd; 1st truck took my witches hats from around my vehicle, kept happening, so I left them where they fell & held my breath until I could get outta there! NEVER AGAIN!

Alot of people lack the instinct of self preservation, if it wasn't for litigation I could just explain the mortality with Darwin's Theory.

Cheers

I remember years ago working for someone else being up a tree overhanging a footpath. We had witches hats blocking it from both ends and a woman wheeling a baby in a pram just parted the cones and walked on in, not once looking up, like she just though someone must have accidently left them there or something. I gave the saw a big rev as she walked under, still barely a reaction

The same thing happened to my mate when he was working near bondi beach he just put his bottom cut in a branch and was about 2 do his top cut when he looked down and saw a woman with 2 little kids come walking right under where he was about to drop this branch from 18metres up.

I was putting the back cut in a big cocas palm a couple of years ago, going to drop it down the driveway into really quiet cul de sac, witches hats out and I could see everything, no problem.

Someone tapped me on the shoulder just as it was about to go, scared the hell out of me. He said something and pointed to a tree next door, I told him ******. I recognised him, one of the top Dermatologists around I'd been to him, 3-4 months to get an appointment, he came through a gate in the back. People amaze me.

As with Done it a while ago while back cutting a cocos palm, this time planning to land it in my mate's pool. All going well until at the last minute his missus pops up beside the pool fence to watch the boys at work. Her question regarding how things were going with the job was answered by the massive splash and total drenching she copped. Thankfully she just laughed it off with the rest of us after a very nervous pause.

Yeah, you think you have the site controlled ..... how often is it halfway thru the back cut when something unwanted happens.
