Thanks for those Ekka hadn't got that one on hazards in the wet tropics, don't you love the cartoons near the end...used to get all those news letters but they stopped producing them about 3yrs ago..go figure

Haven't come across the Tar tree, but have met the Stinging tree up close and personal About the most successful treatment is rolls of elastoplast pressed over the area then quickly pulled off...bikini waxing style.. this removes most of the stingers from your skin, still itches like mad for a couple of days mind you but at least the burning dies down.

Had a tick bury itself into my back a year or more ago, after doing days of d/w removals through some parkland, must have been in the bark or one of the smoko sit downs under the trees. Didn't notice till the bugger made my skin swell a little and become really itchy..ah the pleasures of living in the tropics eh

Picked up a sheep tick about six months ago on my gut. Thought I had the shister with a hot cigarette end and pulled with the pliers. Only left the head in didn't it. Picked it out with a needle and applied plenty of antisep-tick... Next time (if any) I'll go to casualty....found out they carry some nasty sh1T.

Jeez

Talking about ticks.

Just gone on Friday, taken the kids to the park, went for a short bush walk.

Few hours later at home Tegan starts screaming that somethings biting her on the shoulder, have a look and bugger me there's a small paralysis tick burying itself.

I tried to pull it out with my fingers and it started bury faster! Got tweezers and right behind the head gave it a good firm pull out backwards ... all came out, Tegan was pretty good just a few tears.

All is well, we checked the dog as he came with us, no side effects.

I'd say the change of weather has a few of these bugs out right now, also just after a little sprinkle of rain they seem more prevalent.

Ticks hang of foliage waiting for a host to go by, in humans cases they jump on ya clothes and work their way around till they get skin, usually neck or shoulders. I have had one in all my time on my shoulder and yanked that out on my own ... buggers they are. It's like a spider with half the thing under your skin and only half the legs showing.

Poor Tegan, she's had a bad run. A few days before she was with me cleaning up a job and a green ant bit her.

Oh well, at least we dont have those spitting saw fly caterpillars!

You got some pretty nasty critters down there mate. The worst thing we have, is the wifes tongue. Last year, when doing a refresher course on the mainland, I came across an adder. Not like the ones you get..but still crapped myself.

Defensive behaviour:
As mentioned previously, sawfly larvae are highly gregarious. They cluster together in the daytime, often in huge groups and then disperse to feed singly at night. This clustering behaviour offers some protection from natural enemies. Very young larvae form groups with their heads all pointing outwards - again, defensive behaviour.

When disturbed, larvae tap their abdomens up and down and regurgitate a thick, greeny-yellow fluid. This is a very effective deterrent for would-be predators and parasites.

Ekka,
I know this thread is old but when you pull out a tick, make sure you get all of the bugger out, can't remember what exactly happens but not to good specialy with bubs, and they generally put alcohol on it first so it lets go of it's grip.

I put vinegar on the mongrel and it got more pissed off and started digging harder.

I got it all out, what can happen is you bust the head of etc and it stays in, also try not to squeeze the body to much coz it will pump more toxins in ... I got him just behind the head but was worried the head would bust off.

Buggers of things!
