Oh, isn't this the same area that was ordered by govt to not hand feed the dolphins, but in protest all the residents defied the order and continued feeding the dolphins, and the Beattie govt backed down in the face of public opinion allowing the practice to continue. On TV you could see residents with prams etc lining up to feed dolphins and the cops standing by to arrest but they didn't.

Seems double standards to me.

But I do think Tin Can Bay needs saving, from being a backwater full of hicks.

People should never get disheartened because the developer does not always win. If the people give up before the fight even starts they have no chance of winning at all.

Public Land and Waterways belong to all Australians and should never be sold off to private concerns.

Why is it that private individuals who have money feel that they can just do what they like to ruin the beauty of a place just because there is a profit in it?

There is no profit in it for most. This monster marina will supply about 2-3 jobs after it's built, and make lots of money in rent to the owners of the private marina in what used to be public land and waterways.

Make no mistake it will be private. Will the public have access to the water from private jetties and walkways? No. Have you ever encountered a marina which is open to the public? No. Will you be able to fish or take your kids or grandkids to drop a line off these private jetties and see their faces as they catch their first fish? No.

There is nothing in it for 99% of local residents who have trailer boats at home. There is already massive congestion at the Snapper Creek boat ramp which is the only all tide access to the Great Sandy Straits and this proposed Fraser Straits Marina does nothing to alleviate the congestion; in fact, it worsens it by lessening the parking spaces as per usage of the proposed marina.

What about unique experiences? What about the Dolphins, that many thousands of people come to see every year at Tin Can Bay, will they still come in when the only way in to Barnacles is a 30 metre wide channel for the extra 363 boats (approx. 243 marina berths and a 120 boat dry storage). Will this be something that you tell to your grandchildren as a story about the good old days or will it be something that you have preserved for them and their grandchildren. I believe the dolphins come in to interact with us humans because it fascinates them as much as it fascinates us.

The arrogance of the Queensland Government and the Seymour Group to steal this away from our children and grand children is absolutely disgusting!

So how does this get approved by govt etc?

More public boat ramps and amenities would be the go.

My personal experience of Tin Can Bay after numerous visits is that it's a little off the beaten track and a "sleepy town". Not over run by developers or resorts etc, a bit like Jacobs Well and Cabbage Tree Point down this way.

When they build some of these other marina type places they generally create new waterways and a canal estate, they do not really take over an existing waterway. So how can they do that up there I wonder.

On the Gold Coast at Fishermans Wharf and Runaway Bay you can walk around the marina a little bit but you are right, many jetties are off limits and no fishing.

Good luck with your fight.

Seems like such a retarded idea, go built the marina somewhere which isn't gonna destroy so much. From the pictures I see there the current setup has minimal environmental impact. It would take years, possibly decades to recover from the sort of works that have been proposed there. Sure better facilities, but who is gonna go when theres nothing left of the environment.
