Yes, the Australian model saw leaves you with a very very thin wallet.

.... but jokes aside no.

With larger saws there's differences with the bumper spikes and side covers sometimes depending on where you buy them in the USA coz the east coast guys vs the west coast guys thing goes on.... you know, who's got the biggest bar thing!

Well, say the client wants the job done quickly, but also wants it to be done properly. If you've got a bigger ..um... bar. you may be able to get things handled quicker. Especially if you've got the power to back up the bar. I think a newer saw might do a better job in this situation... run more efficiently and smoothly. Runnin out of gas half way through the project wouldn't be so great either. Some of them older saws really guzzle fuel and just dont have any "staying power". Runnin out before the job's done is just a serious waste of time....

It's the details sometimes that make for better customer satisfaction ;-)

Okay i have had a response from Stihl,
here it is.

Quote:
"Hello Simon,

Thank you for your question regarding the price of STIHL products in Australia.

As you have written, the price of STIHL products varies around the world according to various costs. In Australia we have a suggested retail price for our products and by law we cannot dictate the price that our dealers sell our products for. I do acknowledge that the dealers in general will sell the product at about the recommended retail price.

Unlike our companies in the USA and Europe we do not have any manufacturing facilities in Australia. We are required to import our products and incur the shipping and holding costs of doing this.

The cost of the product to us is finally determined by the price we are charged from our supplier and all cost’s to land the product. We then allow for an acceptable margin to cover the cost of running our business and providing a profit to our owners.

As we only sell our products through the servicing dealer network there must be the opportunity for the dealers to cover the cost of running their business.

I suspect that you know all of this already. I am unable to give you specific costs and margins however I assure you we do not inflate our prices to make high margins. I believe that this is obvious if you compare our prices to our legitimate competitors in Australia. We are in a market driven business and must remain competitive to sell product.

To put it another way, if our legitimate competitors could drop their prices and take us out of business I am sure they would.

Your support of STIHL products is appreciated and I hope that it continues. I wish you well in your own business.

Regards

Ken Collier

Commercial Manager

There are more holes in this response than swiss cheese!

I will think on it for a day or so then respond.

In the meantime if anyone else can think of good arguements to Stihls response then please post them and i will include them in my next email to Stihl.

I think this blokes just taken his boots off, cause something sure smells about this, If they can sell in the US a 200T for $500, Surely they can do the same here, Before our exchange rate just about equalised noone really noticed, A smoke screen so to speak, To the States or to Australia there couldn't be that much differance,...correct me if I'm wrong.

Your right JayD, all smoke and mirrors.

If Ekka can get a saw freighted here for around $100, Stihl would be able to get them freighted for a lot less.

How much can their holding costs be?
surely it cant be too much per saw.

When he talks about their competitors pricing, what he means in my opinion is "well if they can get away with it so can we!"

What did I say, same ole same ole!

If the USA is retailing 200T's for $500 how much are they buying them wholesale for?

How about this, why cant the Dealer source the saw at wholesale direct from either USA or Germany and tell the Stihl distributors to rack off as they obviously are grossly inefficient? With USA we have a free trade agreement but not with Germany .... so perhaps Germany is preventing "free trade"!

Quote:
In Australia we have a suggested retail price for our products and by law we cannot dictate the price that our dealers sell our products for.
And is it fair to say that there may be possible collusion between Stihl dealers? All having the same price, same specials and not allowed to sell via internet to reduce costs and increase efficiencies?

Keep pushing, push hard, and push these pertinent points.

I bet as soon as USA saws start showing up in Australia to be repaired that the dealer will have the serial numbers traced to their orgin in the USA......and then directly to the person shipping from the USA.

There is no doubt that Stihl dealers here in the states work together to fix prices.
