As far as I know they all have a chrome-lined bore. I dont think that argument holds water as to why they cost more for you folks.

I just shipped another 200T off to AUS. The guy got the saw just fine.

Any truth of them tracking serial numbers back to the dealers? Shouldnt have anythign to do with the dealers. THEY didnt sell the saw to AUS. As far as they know, the saw is still in California.

The 200T in Washington state is $630-$650 depending on bar length.

Let me know

Could any issue arise with Workcover and/or insurance if an accident occurs with machinery that has no Aust. standards certification??

Sorry to sound so dull though there are a few differences like mufflers (temporary card baffle), chain catchers etc. to make these saws meet AS. If an accident happens and you get investigated and are found with gear that does not meet AS. I believe you are, sadly, screwed..

Though I would love a HT 131 and a 260 if anyone is loading the container!!

Do you know the differences between the USA and Australian standards?

We were just being read the LAW the other day at tafe about all this and how the first thing your insurance company will do now is go through your gear and check it is all to AS. also if anything has been serviced by anyone other than a qualified service mechanic (other than general maintenance) they can deny any claim, they can then notify workcover who can then send you the fine for not complying to their standards..

It was a bit of a shock to me and hard to have to learn how poorly I have been using saws for the last 25 yrs apparently.

I will search for copies of these notes as of course you have to buy them from AS. to view them...

Australian Standards:
AS 2726.1 Chainsaws - Safety requirements - Chainsaws for General Use
AS 2726.2 Chainsaws - Safety requirements - Chainsaws for Tree Service

AS 2726.2-1995 Chainsaws - Safety requirements - Chainsaws for tree service

WorkCover:
Code of Practice - Amenity Tree Industry

Once again, sorry to be such a dag but thats why I'm at tafe and learning from this site, so once I've invested so much in this biz, no one with a clipboard can come and shut me down.

Pete
They are either chrome or Nikasil or a Nikasil like process (Nikasil being a Mahle proprietary coating) and the saws are identical AFAIK.

Stihl are making more and more of their own cylinders now, whereas Husky and Dolmar are primarily cast and manufactured by Mahle.
There was a thread on AS a little while back showing that the quality of the Stihl castings had dropped below Mahle casting quality in finish only, there was no suggestion of it impacting on reliability.

I'm not aux fait with the latest Stihl IPL's and parts, but with Dolmar/Makita's the parts are identical between US and OZ/Kiwi versions, and are listed as such in the IPL to differentiate from the Euro versions, and things like chain catchers are the same over the three markets/standards regions.
In other words I can buy my spares from the US and they fit and are identical to Oz supplied saws and spares, right down to part #'s.

Are there really AS/NZS stickers on a new saw ?

You better insure through Fitzpatrick's then and get the Statuatory Liability cover thrown in.

Also, law is never black and white, and most try to amp up the story to make it sound SO SCARY.

If the saw for example wasn't to some standard and the accident or injury would have occurred regardless of that fact then they will still have to pay. Dont get suckered by all the talk.

As far as servicing and working on equipment, that has never changed, you have liability cover and the person doing the work has to be competent. Stories of people welding discs up that fail and kill people are true, the fact is whatever you do has to be to manf standard or other standards applicable. If you can do that through experience then you'll be OK.

Another example, you buy a lowering device, it comes with a rating and the manf of it has product liability. It fails, not due to abuse or overloading but a 1 in a million thing, insurances are in place for that.

Now you make one, weld it up yourself. You have no certification, you have no product liability .... you are way out there unless you get an engineer to rate it, which can be done. As long as the materials and welds etc are proper and the engineer tests and certifies it you are OK.

Things aren't as black and white as they try to make it out in the real world. (example) My car is defective with bald tyres, it is parked on the side of the road legally, an idiot with no insurance smashes into it so I claim of my comprehensive to fix the $10K damage to the $30K vehicle, the assessor notes bald tyres which are defective, will the insurance company deny the claim? They can try and your lawyer will take them to court (if not the media or Dept Fair Trading), why? Because the bald tyres had nothing to do with the event and made no difference to the outcome.

Thanks anyway Therrin, The planets aligned and I managed to squeeze a great deal out of my local for the 131, they had no room to store it.

Amazing bit of kit, sounds like a 4 stroke dirt bike and cuts anything I can reach!

Cheer's,

Dano
