hey guys im a diploma student and really having difficulty identifying some fungi for an assignment. i've found no useful books in libraries or anything useful on the internet. if anyone could recommend any books or websites that may help that would be great. im mainly interested in bracket fungi. below are a few photos of fungi im trying to id for an assignment im doing currently, any suggestions as to what they may be would be greatly appreciated. the first photo (from a euc cladocaylx) was taken where the tree co dominates at about 6m. fungi growing just above the union in a hole at the base of 1 of the stems the second photo is from a euc im yet to id. i found the fungi on the ground but im sure it had fallen from 1 of 2 points in the tree at about 5m where the tree was once lopped. it is soft and crumbly. the last 3 photos come from a street tree in malvern. its your typical melbourne plane street tree with a once lopped, now regrowth crown. one photo is on top of a pruning wound where as you can see the cambium has died back, and fungi is growing. the other photo is the same fungi growing out of a crack/seam in the trunk. its texture is somewhere between spongy and hard / woody. the final photo is to better show you what is happening. to answer the question I think you may ask, there is a hole below the pruning wound containing white, brown rot and termite damage but im sure this is unrelated to the other fungi im trying to id. p.s. – the little old lady living under the tree is concerned and once ive finished my report for my assignment I intend to share it with the local city council and recommend a tomograph as ive sounded the trunk and its hollow as a drum!! i've got more photos of all trees if that would help ![]() thanks very much nick c |
