Sorry for the double post, BUT after looking at the video again, I think it would be safe to say that that guy is going to get racked over the coals here.

The two things that stood out in the removal footage where the lack of a climbing line (so only one point of attachment) and where he is felling the large trunk his position to the trunk was suicidal and he appeared to cut MOST of the hinge wood.

The pruning footage was really grainy, and it was difficult to tell if the boulavard tree were previously pollarded. There MAy have been knobs ther, but I have old eyes.

Looks like they might have been paid on volume!

He's from the Netherlands.

Well, the trees were previously pollarded but I'm not sure they grow that much in a year or two.

In most shots they're pretty good on PPE except here where the ground under the load has no helmet and the home owner same.

I'd say overall they're OK with some minor breaches.

Here's the log fell and where he cut the hinge wood, not the best and the centre is maybe what it hinged on, however if it was a forward leaner does it matter?

I've seen a lot worse and think "hack" is a little harsh. Sure there's some breaches here and there but on what job site isn't there?

Eric you're right if it was a forward leaner then it was always going the way it did....and we don't know what kind of discussions/planning/decisions went into it.....as an aside when I'm working up north with Tim and Stephen we do quite a bit of felling, sometimes very trickey (heart beating in mouth stuff) more often than not mundane mindless stuff...BUT....if Tim or I were to have a stump looking like that (and yes I do sometimes!) there would be a good deal of post felling explaining to do, technique and method are critical in tree felling, reproducing perfect hinges every time on basic simple stuff is imperative if you are to be able to deal with dangerously unstable tree stems.

As I say hopefully the faller was as embaressed about those pulled fibres and lack of proper hinge as I would be, and it was used as a learning tool for the next fell.

Well, the thing you have to remember is he was cutting the hinge wood off as it was falling.

Have you ever done that when taking a top out? I have, keep cutting so it's gone.

So in defence of the guy the tree was falling then the hinge wood was cut out. Sure it's not the best but he done it purposefully, only he can tell us why but a hack wouldn't have had those cuts so flat and I've even had "hacks" use no scarf and just back cut with the hinge if you could call it that being the bark strip they leave. He didn't do the angled back cut BS either.

So, I still think calling these guys "hacks" is a bit harsh.

Hmmm...I certainly don't cut through the hinge wood esp not when I'm up in the tree with nowhere to go...maybe I'm misunderstanding your meaning there?

If I'm worried about the weight distribution of a tree top I'm removing then I'll place a pull/control line in the top, I just can't imagine when I would deliberately cut through the hinge, I want it to operate all the way once the piece starts to go....On the ground I'm not at the stump once the tree starts to go, if you get into the habit of staying at the stump cutting through the hinge you'll get bitten for sure.

i gotta admit i cut the hinge wood out when im trying to jump the piece over something especially if its a tree whos wood doesnt leave witha crisp snap. it gives the piece better propulsion.

I usually only cut through the wood in one shot with no hinceing while doing drop and slice cuts,on occassion i will cut an inch or 2 on either side while felling espically with palms.I almost always have a pull rope in the top i'm cutting out to ensure its going where i want it and in most of my critical felling.I'm with Ekka i wouldn't call them hacks either.

Sometimes like Shea says to get the piece to fly, jump a fence etc.

As it's going over, it's well on its way you keep cutting through so there's no jolting
