3 pics for you. The tree is a Euc grandis (flooded gum) that was topped. You can see in the pics the resultant epicormic growth, I suppose the growth is around 45' to 50' long (15m to 17m) and the largest dia where it joins the stem maybe 8" (200mm). So, look at the pics and have a guess, how long ago was the tree topped or how old are those epicormic shoots? ![]() ![]() ![]()

Around here, I've seen topped Photinia / Red tip, a huge shrub tree, grow back 8 feet in one year, and I'll bet that tree may beat it with your weather. So if maybe it can go 15 feet a year - just a guess - how about 3 years. Looks like 35 to 40 growth to be, above the topping stub. Odds are the first year's sprouts were not as radical as the consecutive years. 3 years? Now one other way to look at it, would be growing seasons, which could make my guess 2 and 1/2 years. |

Here's another clue, this is a cross section shot of the larger epicormic close the trunk. Remember, Brisbane Queensland, 3 years drought, semi tropical. ![]()

Some of you guys are guessing way to high, it seems that the harder you cut back those eucs the faster they grow. I've seen close to 20-25 feet of growth in one season here. Im gonna say min 2 years and max 5(unlikely though).

I would have to say 7-10 years wonder how close I am. Just a quick question, are those epicormic shoots safe to climb? I do a lot of tree's out here like that, and all my work is climbing. What do I look for in a weak epicormic shoot?
