Default G'day from windy OryGun

G'day mates.

I came over on an invite from Newguy18 on AS. Server on AS is so slow these days I cannot even post there any more. So I am over here now, under the same abuser name. I see a lot of others from there and some other sites are here as well. I posted this in chainsaws as that is where I post the most. We have 100+ acres here mostly in big trees and we do a lot of felling, thinning, bucking and firewood cutting. I also have an orchard here, as well as a pinot noir and berry vineyards and a bamboo and cane berry nursery.

Right now its blowing and raining hard here in the biggest storm in a decade. Well, more time to rest up and drink beer before cleaning up after the storm (parts of the roof are scattered around the house today)...

No blizzards this storm. Snow level went up to 8,000 feet. This is what they call a 'pineapple' from Hawaii. 57 degrees outside right now. We got 4 inches of rain here in 2 days. Pretty good stream flows, but we are not at flood stage here (yet). The storm is supposed to blow out by tomorrow morning.

Looks like I will be roofing tomorrow. A 4 ft section of shingles blew off today. Then its back to tree felling and bucking up in the oak grove restoration project (2 acres of huge black and white oaks where we are clearing out a few thousand fir trees).

Have fun with the oak grove but for right now stay safe.I went out in a catagory 3 hurricane a couple years ago to cut a tree of my uncle's electric fence and got knocked over a couple times from the wind.

Oh, I have zero intention of going out there today or tonight. Unless there is a tree down on the house, across the road, or some other place that has to be delt with in the storm, forget it. I checked the roof and it has some plastic underlayment still up there... doing something. No leaks inside the house yet.

Some news from your parts.

Trees topple over during wicked storm | KVAL CBS 13 - News, Weather and Sports - Eugene, OR - Eugene, Oregon | Local & Regional News

Here's a link to the video I fished but I couldn't copy the bugger!

http://depository.shadowtv.net/flash...&autoPlay=true

It's good that the media actually promote getting trees inspected by qualified arborists and NOT TOPPING THEM.

Quote:
Eugene - The howling winds in some areas were accompanied by the sound of cracking tree limbs, which kept local arborists on the move.

It seemed today that people were either working on preventative measures or in some cases damage control.

"I heard the crash and I thought OK which one is it this time," says South Eugene resident Eunice Kjaer. Kjaer is no stranger to trees toppling over. "Last night a big Fir came down hit the corner of the front porch this morning about 10:30 another Fir came down," Kjaer explains.

And with it, snapped a Laurel and other small trees. Knocking out her power littering her front lawn with debris, and leaving the cleanup on Storey Boulevard to the kindness of neighbors.

But Kjaer say's living around the trees of South Eugene she knew what was coming. "I was bracing for this one because the year we had the 70 mile an hour winds. I was pretty nervous because of these Fir trees," says Kjaer.

And her home in the hills wasn't the only one with an un-invited guest. But it was a different story across town where Sperry Tree Care crews were trying to stop a tree from crashing into nearby homes.

"This trunk fell in the middle of the tree and it's now stabilized and we're lowering out pieces to take the tree the rest of the way down," says Nathaniel Sperry, owner of Sperry Tree Care.

Because this old tree had a defect, Sperry say's it had to come down. But for Kjaer, whose tree had weak roots, it was already too late.

"Thankfully the house is intact, I'm so grateful for that," says Kjaer.

To keep your trees safe, make sure you have them inspected annually by a qualified arborist. Prune trees correctly when they're young and don't allow your trees to be topped.

Great links Eric and I'll strongly second your approval of the media message re Arbs checking trees, something we need to mirror here if we get the chance say it often and say it loud!!!

Windthrown hoping you and yours have come through that storm with little damage, the pics I've seen reflect incredible rainfall and high winds, we know a little bit about that here in NQ too so keep safe mate.

Very sorry to hear about the "Sitka Spruce" but even with such a massive failure through the stem it could well be a new beginning for the next generation of seedlings through the next 700yrs and beyond, clearly the lightning damage 40yrs ago created a defect at around 80feet up that would eventually fail.

RIP Kloochy, and of course the search for the next largest to take it's place hopefully isn't too far away.

It's mellower down here in southern Oregon. But I'd be very happy to be back up north at Washington County.

Did you live in Oregon during the 1962 Columbus Day storm?

Wikipedia has a fairly thorough article on it. The winds of the 1962 storm were about 40% stronger than this last one.

Yah, I was a kid living with my family in Lake Oswego, OR when the October, or Columbus Day storm hit. It was a big one. Power was out for 2 weeks. Power lines were down all over the place, and we were instructed to jump over them walking to school. Completely flattened the fence (dog-eared fence, set on posts set in concrete). House was 6 years old and faired well. We lived on camp stove food in the kitchen, and ate everything in the freezer. We had picked and frozen a bunch of blueberries a few weeks before, and ate everything with blueberries. I loved that.

This last sorm was not as big as the Eugene Storm that blew through here either. That storm took out the whole front of the barn, which is still missing the siding on the walls on the entire east end. I am still finding trees downed by this last storm though. This a 100+ acre ranch. We run sheep on 25 acres of pastures, and the rest is in timber. Several of the skid roads are blocked, and we will be cutting more firewood from the windthrow.
