Guilty of cutting into my flipline, phew! thank goodness for my second.

In my time, with only using 1 flipline on one occasion and not tending my slack on another and thinking I could jump for the next limb, only to slip and broke ribs on both occasions. I was one of the lucky ones......

Only time I've free climbed, was when i was a kid, NEVER now.

I dont climb with a saw so much anymore, but im about to get with it again. I free climb all of the time. I still feel like a monkey in trees with many branches that take away the fear factor.

Just read all of the replies. Im trying to move up in the world of TREE WORLD. Im no longer a newbie, but im breaking ice. That is funny. I like it. I am surprised there are not more free climbers. I dont mean for work, with a chain saw. I do not climb daily though. I have someone that does my tree climbing. But I did do my own climbing for a short while, but I need to make it a daily routine.

I do find myself free climbing trees while im out fishing or something. If the fish arent biting I might be looking for the best climbing tree with the best view. Usually a tall maple. Sweet gums tend to leave me enough branches to make it easy and safe.

Default Once was enough for me ...

Well, I did it once ... But I'm resolved to not make that mistake again.

I had a crappy, unsuitable, "flipline" but the numerous uncliping it over limbs and even small suckers coming out of the main trunk gave me reason to buy a hand saw to carry with me on lifeline positioning climbs and for use in pruning.

I was happy to hear the votes for Silky saws as I just bought this:

I received one lame, limp flipline with a "starter kit", I bought a second which I now believe to be a pole climbing lanyard. After much confusion of the terms and tools I think I now know what a proper flipline is.

I'm most definitely going to get one with a cable inside now as a measure of protection from cutting. I figured that the chainsaw would rip right throuigh it, but never considered that the handsaw could cut it as well.

Aerial, a flipline with a cable inside of it, is in no way "protection from cutting". For a conventional climbing saw, say under the 55cc mark, one mishap and cut and you would be about 1/3 to 2/3 through it. The difference between a rope flip line and a rope with cable core flip line is not protection, but a time extension in the unlikely even of you cutting it. 0.25-1 second to cut through a rope flip line, about 2-4 seconds to cut through a cable core flip line.

There is one more difference I should state though, you shouldn't climb near power lines with a cable core cuz one flash and you'll be ash

I'll free climb at times in small limby trees,I'll still have my rope or lanyards to clip in to cut or work but moving around with lots of hand/footholds I'll be unclipped but only occasionally, and it has to be the right tree
