Default First palm job

Well there it is... the five bearded ones and one in the far corner of the property behind the house.

The power lines are on the side of the street the picture was taken from, which is the opposite side of the house with the palms.

Would most people suggest SRT to clean them up? Never done a palm before. Figured this would be a good place to get broken in. I know the guy who owns the house from somewhere I used to work, so it's not a random stranger's place either.

On a scale of 1 (being really good and pleasant) 10 being (satan himself hates me) those are up there around a 9

Why aren't they a 10, because at least the crap can fall down and most of it is near the road for easy clean up.

Now the previous cutting has been crap, see all those little stubs sticking out, if you were going to climb that shit stick with spikes you'd have to cut all of them off on the way up.

Also, you need to confirm with the customer that they dont want that crap on the trunk cleaned up etc, be vigilant on this or you will do your backside if some of it falls off and some doesn't etc and they want it cleaned off.

If it were my job, I'd be getting a bucket truck.

From a holistic point of view, cleaned or not, they are totally out of proportion with the house and landscape and look ugly. The ones in the background with their little cabbage on top is what these will look similar to cleaned. Now imagine some nice trees or shrubs there which could provide flowering colour or fruit even, what a poor choice.

See the double ones on the left hand side both front and back?

Go and check the retaining wall for leaning, bowing or cracking.

Good luck, the mess will be triple what you anticipate and if you have to haul these rather than chip them, take a camp bed and gauntlet gloves.

Have fun! That is a job I would seriously consider passing up unless I really needed the money or had a bucket truck.

Like Ekka said, the mess is gonna be way bigger than you anicipate. Also be carefull those beards can come loose and fall right on top of you.

Never had to do any that bad personally.

Well that's less than heartening.. but thanks for being upfront.

So Ekka... you could make a reasonable argument that based on the placement, the surroundings, degree of maintenance, etc, that they are not a good choice of tree for that house, and possible removal is also recommended?

In your opinion, would it increase or decrease the property value to have them there or not?

I can only say what people think here.

They're ugly, and they most often devalue the house. And we most often remove them when a new owner buys the house or the existing owners simply gets sick of the mess, maintenance and cost.

Palms do not grow out, they grow taller and less shade is cast. Dead fronds do not transpire or photosynthesize but offer a home to mainly possums, pigeons, cockroaches and rats here. All undesirables around your home.

The proximity to the retaining wall is not good, cant tell in that shot but I'd be saying trouble down the track.

Go to a good nursery and find some nice small trees, perhaps flowering ones suitable for that place. And maybe that one on the right hand side can grow normal again instead of a ravine through it.

Also, the place needs something else, all that grass and lack of foliage is so .... boring.

Looks like Therrin is about to get a real nasty de-virginization on palm tree jobs...
A bucket truck does seem nice here, but it still won't work for the ones in the back. If it were me, I'd rent a light but tall crane to work on these. We do that quite often when the tree isn't reliable or hard to work on.

Ugly mofo's.
Very costly to get rid of here.
Even though he's a mate. It sometimes pays to get them to get other quotes. That way if you're doing "mates rates" then they realise the work and cost involved alot more rather than just making big $$$$$.
Good luck on bursting that palm cherry!!!

OH yeah, forgot to mention palm can be expensive to dump at a landfill or dump yard. Better check into that before you dive in.
