Doesn't this picture just strike a note of tree-huggin love in your guy's little black hearts? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Wants 6 palms cleaned, and a pine removed. Pine is right up against a fence. Other than that no big deal. Has some other things there that REALLY need to be dealt with, but she wasnt home, and hadn't mentioned it when I called her the first time about coming over. Im going to address that in the following call. She "just owns" the place, its a rental apparently. |

Ahh, forgot to mention. I took Dad along. That was pretty cool. He's looking at the 6 palms (4 in front, 2 in back) going "oh my god, oh my god, these are terrible, oh god, you dont actually work on these things do you?" followed by "how the hell do you trim these things?" Followed by "how long do you think for these 4 Ken, 5 or 6 hours?" ![]() I said "maybe with a pocket knife, hah. About 15 to 20 mins each Dad, I havent done a palm in a little while". He was shocked, kept arguing with me. He's pretty sure the whole job for cleaning the 6 palms and the pine removal will take 3 or 4 days. I said, nah, 4 hrs maybe. Maybe less. We may even bet on it =) He's still amazed by "the process". That kinda makes me feel good. It's hard to know anything that he doesnt already know. (hehe) |

Two of the four Washys in the photo would take about 20-30 for me, but the other two could take me an hour each. The pine should be no big deal, looks like you could just drop it...right? How many guys you going to have draggen the debris?

Do you have to pay for debris dumping? What do you think that pines weight is? I guess 10,000 pounds. How much weight on the Washys? My guess is around 6,000 pounds.

The washy's they just want the dead skirts trimmed off of. Only tough one is the one that's on the 'left' side in the picture, it leans out at a slight angle. And the pine is about 40' tall, about 20" dbh. Hell no I'm not gonna drop it! This isnt some "hardcore country shit"! I'm gonna limb it out and then rig it down in sections.Me and one groundy. Oh I forgot the best part!!! She specified they dont want cleanup, drop everything in the yards and leave it. Quote:
I know i know, some of you guys do stuff like this job as just one of your clients during a normal days work with your crews. Prolly go through this stuff in no time flat. | |

The question about tie in was are you doing them top down or spurring up them? I believe there's some standard or something in USA that prohibits spurring up them for cleaning when the skirt is more than 3 years old due to skirt falling down, crushing or suffocating the climber.

Oh, spurring going up. Same way I always do. These arent compacted with enough crap and they're fairly well springy still, I got up under one skirt and was pokin around up under there. I can do em bottom to top and then come back down with no troubles. One of these days i'll work more on the running bowline and ascend the rope and all that... not for this project. Or, eh, maybe on one of the shorter ones just to see how I like it. Gotta be more worried and carefull about cutting your lines that way and you gotta work em half sides at a time. Though I suppose once you get secured, going from top down wouldnt be sooo bad. I tend to go up from underneath, in a circular motion, around the truck, ever stepping higher as i turn and work so that i spiral myself up the trunk as i'm moving around it. Works good under the canopy, fast technique, allows for you to make direct cuts. Yeah I'll think about that, maybe I'll practice top-down one one or two of them, its not like I'm gonna be spending my entire day there anyway, I guess I could give it a go and see how it is. |

Im pretty sure that they'll take a bit more than 15 min each. BTW think about doing one of the tall ones first then jump to a shorter one as you decend Its hard to tell from the pics, but if that pine will fit in the yard and you can pull the little plants if front of it away a bit I wouldn't be afraid to dump the whole thing in 1 shot with a rope to help pull it over. |

thats what i was referring to in my question about tying in. i tie in if there tall enough and repel and kick over. i will also pull up a pole pruner to cut a bunch of fronds off the neighboring palms to really open them up before i kick over. then remove my climbing line(just detach and leave for later) work the other palm then come back to my detached line reconnect and kick over to the other short one. but if you dont tie in to washys and your not sure where to do it, then dont, because palms can be tricky and at the very least the rope will be very difficult to remove (like one really strong(fat) person, or 2 not so strong people. or you could have a worse problem ![]() could use a false crotch once you get the tall one done and work the smaller ones and then njust go back for your rigging. ![]() oh yeah, do you have a pole saw? hyachi, jameson, whatever. I have found when the skirts are that old you can remove alot of them from the ground by pulling on them. Man, let us know when your doing the job so we can be thankful that day were not doing them. It will help us have a good day. ![]() ![]() ![]() pics after or doing would be sweet. be safe. all of my serious injuries have come from palms and trimming them. please be safe Last edited by stirmantrees; 8th October 2009 at 03:16 AM. |

How do write your quote up? verbal or have you got a draft you use? do you get specific? signature? just curious as i have found that good clear specs can be a life saver, like, not hauling debris, only trimming dead fronds, leaving stump, payment due upon completion of project, etc. can you imagine her husband coming home who is really in charge and saying "but you were suppose to haul it away" that would be bad, it happens. trust me. maybe this is a friend so whatever. you seem to be pretty detailed in your post and i want you to be succesful. might as well learn from some of my costly mistakes |

Nah I found her on craigslist while browsing some other stuff and thought I'd give her a call. She had me go over and check it out but it's a rental property and she wasnt there, so if she goes ahead with it I'll have her sign the paper before I begin. Doing the tall one first then swinging over is somethin I'd like to try out. I've never had the chance to do one from the top down before, but I've never worked on any this small either. If you noticed from my other palm thread, the other palms were closer to 2.5x this tall, and had closer to 35 to 50 ft of skirt on them. Talk about shit palm work... ![]() Thats why I saw these and I went, woohoo! small ones! lol. Thx for the advice. I'll let you guys know if it goes through. |
