Default to fell or not to fell

have a job coming up with an ironbark only 200-350mm DBH, it's on a near 45 degree lean. It's leaning over an expsensive mechanical gate (which can't be removed by your average bloke) and brick pillar, with the gate open due to the position of the tree i probaly have just enough room to squeeze her down. BUT if it goes wrong then disaster........no other trees around to rig off. either fell or get a small tower in....for 15 mins work at the price for 2hrs hire...........

nah man i'm gonna fell her....best not to rush into these things though.......not happening till next weekend..i'll have to get some photos....she'll be tight.

Side rope adjusted gun.

Have you got room to side rope it?

Have you seen my video, you must adjust the gun and side rope at 90 degrees to the adjusted gun or she'll bust out and take out the gate

Assuming can't be climbed and pieced down, I'd agree with Ekka view the vid on the adjusted gun technique, use a control line good quality static line..no stretch with wedges, don't rush any part of the fell.

Well, that's easier then.

Dont get caught with a barber chair when doing your back cut.

Biggest problem might be it rolling or moving once it's hit the deck, foams!

There's some basic info here that you may find useful, it isn't everything you need to know, its the basics, with some reasonable diagrams on the bore cut for trees leaning in the direction of the fall.

Good advice above, foam padding or old tyres to protect it rolling sideways into the gate or pillar. On steep ground tying the butt to the stump as though you were rigging it can help too!

did this job today. no photos.....man i gotta get a camera! got an old schoolie filmer but need a digi. had bout half meter where i had to put it!.....no rope coz she was leaning way that way.....only shallow skarf but i had a sloping top and bottom cut so it'd stay open through out the entire fall. checked it and then checked it again. a mil off here and there. then nice and slow with the back cut.. i kept cutting as it started to go and i think i steered it a little by taking more off one side of the backcut as it was falling....

just another day i suppose.

Good stuff, didn't roll?

I went up to Caloundra today and banged down a few trees.

Got a video of a big paperbark going over but had to rush rush .... under quoted! (not me, the bloke I worked for, he did it to match a price and get the job)

no rolling, it was probaly only 200mm. the trunk was nice and straight despite being on a huge lean. not a lot of foliage either. i must have looked at it for half an hour being going ahead with it. bit risky but i didn't rush. one of them jobs where i had to call on all my experience as limited as it may be.
