Default Eucs were tallest trees in the world, big wood Aussie logging, world's tallest trees

And they may be again.

Here's a link to an excellent site on the monsters down Victoria/Tasmania ... pity the largest were felled, easily the world record holders.

That's a great site Ekka, I love those B&W photos BTW the high climber topping out dead ashes was Charlie Wall http://www.nre.vic.gov.au/virtualexh...trees/low3.htm Absolutely blows me away spike up there only a lanyard then axe yes AXE off the top 30/40m!!! Imagine getting on the wrong side of guys like Charlie on a Friday night @#$%!!

Nothing but respect for the strength some of those older tree men had (if a little troubled by the impact they had over the years on the forests)

See, we hear of Beranek, Art Martin and all these Amercian loggers but the ole Aussies have been cutting big timber and getting little recognition. Heavy hardwood that slabs up too!

See if we can dig up our own legends of the big wood ... who else do we know?

This ones WAS close by....The Thorpdale tree in South Gippsland. This was measured twice by a surveyor, once when it was standing by a theodolite (a surveying instrument) and again when it was cut down - in 1880. Its cut down height was 114m (374 feet). This tree was actually listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the tallest tree in the world as there was actual documents available to verify this. Today a plaque denotes it resting place and the site can still be visited - although with nothing present there isn't much point except to remember man's folly.

East gippsland fallers have a real good reputation generally down here IMO.

Here's the latest on the USA Redwoods.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...NGQRL0TDV1.DTL

378.1' but from this link http://www.tcha.org.au/tallesttrees.htm

Quote:
The best known and most famous example is the "Ferguson Tree" which was actually a fallen Mountain Ash downed by a recent bush fire. This was measured by a government surveyor, William Ferguson by tape measure on the 21st February 1872. The length was a staggering 133 metres (436 feet) with its crown (the tree's top) broken off!! The stump's diameter five feet off the ground was 5.5m (18 feet) and at its broken top its diameter was still 1 metre.

Lots of information on this excellent site for USA trees too, also goes right into detail on how to measure them.

http://www.nativetreesociety.org/

If you look around the site you'll find comparisons between laser clinometer and tape drops ... pretty close, but there's also a page on the big misses in that measuring department using older technology.

Yeah good clip boa, have seen it before

Dont know how i'd feel going quite so high in something that tall. That was a pretty small diameter decayed stem he was on up the top! At least it wasnt windy.

Plenty of branches and time to catch one if ya did fall or breakout.

I'd say, and be guessing.

I'd use dynamic rope and a series of anchors on the trunk section similar to rock climbing for the last 30' say.

As you go up whack another girth hitched tape in with a biner and clip in the dynamic lifeline which is being belayed by the other bloke further down, was 2 of them.

If something busted and you fell you'd get knocked up but live! Still have 2 lanyard, you could see the branches close enough to walk it, no air humping.

I asked Tom Greenwood how thin and what it was like when he measured that Tassie regnans. He said you have to get right up there on that skinny stuff and physically put the tape measure to the tip ... eeeeerrrrriiiiieeee maaaan.
