Trump Loses Ficus Fight

Donald Trump's ficus trees have been fired.

The city council in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, voted unanimously Tuesday to force the Apprentice honcho to uproot a 10-foot-high hedge composed of hundreds of ficus trees he had planted earlier this year at his Trump National Golf Club without permission from the city.

Trump said he had the trees installed to shield the club's driving range from views of "unsightly" neighboring homes. However, residents of some of those homes complained that the foliage blocked their enviable ocean views, leading the city council to take action.

The council is slated to take the final step of finding the hedge in violation of the property's permit on Dec. 18, after which time Trump will have three weeks to remove the plantings.

The real estate mogul said he would be relocating the ficus trees to another one of his properties, but expressed his displeasure with the city's ruling.

"The city council should be ashamed of its decision," Trump told the Torrance Daily Breeze. "It's very sad that the town is willing to destroy this beautiful hedge. There's no plant as beautiful as the ficus, and no plant that does the trick like the ficus."

Mayor Doug Stern disagreed with Trump's rave review of the ficus, indicating that as far as he was concerned, the sooner the trees were gone, the better.

"I wish they could be out by Christmas, that would make a great Christmas present," Stern said.

Trump said he did not know what he would plant, if anything, to replace the banned trees.

The combovered executive is currently readying himself for the launch of Celebrity Apprentice, the latest edition of his boardroom blitz, featuring such pseudo-household names as Vincent "Big Pussy" Pastore, Stephen Baldwin and original Apprentice mean girl Omarosa.

The new season premieres Jan. 3.

Apparently was part of the development condition and he breached it plus attempted to shield other residents view of the ocean.

Just thinking outside the box here.

He lets the hedge grow massive and thick, no bugger can see the ocean or have that benefit. Buys them all out for a reduced price, demolishes the hedge and sells ocean view homes.

That'd be the typical Trump wouldn't it?

Yeah but you know what they say the squeaky hinge gets the oil.Its a shame though that out there you have all these people that protest the logging industry and then when something like this arises they're no where to be found.

Lets hope he doesn't become a member here you'll give him ideas. Then again maybe just maybe we could get him to buy all those houses demolish them and plant several hedges.Win win we get more trees and no more whiners.

In UK they brought out the Antisocial Behaviour Act - Trees and Hedges.

A problem evolved where people were planting these cypress hedges and screening out neighbours.

Neighbours living in the dark due to shade etc complained enough that some sort of law was passed.

Here's a link which if you hunt around has documents which have the rules ... quite detailed really.

High hedges - Planning, building and the environment - Communities and Local Government

In this case I'm on the residents side as they were there first with no ficus trees and an ocean view.

What amazed me was that there were condtions or rules to stop him having the hedge, that's forward thinking and obviously was considered or must have occured before for them to have thought about it.

I know in inner Brisbane we have cut trees up to 3 houses away and even in the next street so people get a view, it's worth a lot of money. The person at the top of the hill pays and asks the guy further down if he'd mind having his tree cut down, free! In some cases they even sling the tree owner a few good dollars coz they know it improves the property value so much.

Now what would be funny is if the council planted the footpath out! Happens here, residents opposite the ocean often run over or poison trees on the beach frontage which block the view. I've seen many staked new trees run over or ripped out over and over. The bloke paid for that spot without trees and doesn't want council trees in the way.

I've always said be considerate of what and where you plant as far as tresspassing trees go however I overlooked the visual aspect. That's just another evolutionary urban tree problem I assure you, view impairment.

Yeah I understand but what I don't get are people who protest all aspects of treework you know the people who say removal of an alive tree is murder. What they fail to see is the hazard a tree can pose to a house or service lines or in many cases human lives.Your right though those people were there first and its actually good to see money losing in the court room for once.

Sure.

Now they are famous trees.

Just re-ball them, and sell them as the famous Donald Trump trees.

Or, you could picture them as the only thing he's ever *lost* money on, and stay the heck away from them
