I know this is a silly question but we have a situation that is very mysterious. We just moved to a new house and we have a back yard full of trees. We have two different kinds of poplars, a maple, an ash and and elm, as well as a crab apple tree. Lately we have been cleaning this white sand type substance off our deck. Is it possible it is coming from one of our trees? We are not sure where else it would be coming from.

Of course it does, that's why glass manufacturers buy trees.

ohhh boy. is that ash tree near by? better hire someone to come check it for emerald ash borer. they dig into the wood and it leaves powder.if it is EAB you might loose your tree. i hope its not that.

It is hard like sand. We thought it was coming from the Elm becasue that is the tree that mostly covers the deck. But the Ash it right beside it. What should we be looking for?

they bore into the tree and lay eggs where the larva hatch and bore into the tree. the larva are like termites in that they make alot of sand like dust that comes from there rear end. good luck to ya if you have any questions about EAB there is a ton of internet articles out there.
