Hi, I'm starting some trees and plants indoors using a grow light. Do plants also require periods of darkness or should I leave the light on 24/7? |

yes plants need both, the diurnal cycle influences the metabolic and physiological processes, also On a diurnal time scale water moves out of the cells and into the extracellular region in the morning and back into the cells in the late afternoon and evening. This leads to a diurnal cycle in the extracellular water content. The magnitude of the diurnal cycle gives a measure of the cross sectional area of the extracellular region that is filled with water during the daytime period. Over a multi-day period, the minimum value of the diurnal cycle will vary in proportion to the water content of the plant as a whole. As the plant dries out, both the magnitude of the diurnal cycle and the minimum value decrease. hope this helps

Actually for the vegetative section of growth a plant can grow for 24 hrs a day, its only for flowering you need to introduce dark cycles to induce flowering. Dont ask me how I know this, but I do. What G, says is true, but you can give 'most' plants 24 hrs of light and 'trick' them to keep them in a vegetative state, I say most flowering plants are like this, thats all I have experience with. Have fun. -Graisl. |

It's how trees know the seasons ... light periods (besides temperature). How about those places that are like dark and light for 6 months of the year? Flower growers have for ages manipulated blooms to match cultural events to increase sales.... dope growers too!
