I've been pondering this for sometime,do codominant trees grow bigger in a growing season than a tree with a single trunk?

Good question. It may depend on what you mean by "bigger". Do you mean taller? or more timber volume? or wider? I think if co-dominant trees grew more timber volume the forestry boys would be breading trees that way but obviously they are not. Of course co-dominant trees don't generally grow straight and are more likely to fail so there are good reasons not to grow them for timber production. They almost certainly grow wider. They kind of have two canopies so they have a head start in that area. As for taller. That would depend on whether they are in a stand and having to compete for light. If in the open I would say (without any sound evidence)that a sigle leader tree would grow taller. Anyway that's my thoughts with very little to back them up. Cheers |

Hmmm... Could a single tree of co-dominant stem structure create almost its own competiton for light amongst the 2 stems, encouraging both stems to aim higher???? |

I was thinking of diameter, since its essentially two trees merged into one, they each have to grow every growing season.

I would have said no because the co dominant will fail long before it challenges the single stemmed tree due to weak attachment points.
