i was sooo annoyed this morning taking down one 20" and one 13" dbh cocos plumosa palms. we dropped the palms no problem and then bucking was another story. the kerfs always close up on the first 2-3 inches so i had to bore cut every thing when bucking. damn it i hate these palms!

Use a powerful saw and cut through the leaf scar...judging it as you go.

You bore them, wing cut the top of the bore cut .... roll the log and wing cut it again. Same as in the video except the wing cuts can be directly into the bore cut. You'll figure it out ..... triangle palms are even worse bastids for clamping the bar.

Cut the head off and leave it until last, they will dull the chain, bloody things suck, we often can grab the whole head with the kanga.

Well, here's my explanation. Palms unlike trees do not have heartwood and sapwood. They are vascular for the entire diameter, bundles of tubes you can imagine. So they are moist for the entire diameter and they are quite flexible, they bend a lot in the wind. Palms generally only grow upwards (once full dia established). There is never any deadwood within that inertly supports the palm, it's all working and it's wet. So you cut into it, the kerf is not kept open very well, the palm is moving. Pieces are flexing, stretching, shrinking like loaded rubber bands plus you have the weight of the section you cut (if blocking down). Have you ever cut the head off a palm and waited to see what happens? I have and you literally see pieces move up and down. You look back at the palm 1 hour later and whole sections have dropped or risen, like layers, especially around the crown shaft area. Try it on a cuban or alex palm. At a seminar Klaus Mattheck called them bastids, big rubber bands he called them, exact words were "bastid rubber bands".

haha thats too funny! bastid rubbish! i allways thought it had to do with the fibers being under pressure from all that weight for so long and once they are cut they can finally relax hence the fibers closing expanding into the cut.
