It was roadside so some-one would have to approve it I'd say.

Maybe, and just thinking outside the box. Maybe they figured it had to go anyway for safety or something and figured it would be better to do it now and use the wood for something than have it decayed and wasted.

More examples of people/companies cutting trees without thinking or without permission.

In the news this Month.
Read the entire story at this site.
Criminal charge over tree-chopping

The developer of a spec house "ordered" the $9600-tree cut down on city property because the buyer wanted a clear view to the smog-covered-downtown! Yeah! How stupid can you be!

In a similar story another developer of a high rise condo hired a tree-cutting-company that "accidentally" cut 150 LARGE Live Oaks that have been market to remain on the site by the City Forester. "Accidentally-wink, wink!"
He may get a small administrative fine and was asked to replant "seedlings" to replaced the lost mature 90-year-old-trees. What a joke!

LiveLeak.com - Cutting Down the largest known Walnut Tree in the World

Have any of you guys?
I think it was criminal it took 15 guys to cut down this tree over 2 days. Tree may have been dead? Perspective may have been misleading but I could see it taking 1 day with my groundman and me and crane and my 75 foot bucket. Walnuts are very sensitive to grade change or any fussing around their roots and this one is right on the roadside.
