Default Crane removing 150-year-old oak tree crashes

A Californian couple must have got the shock of their life when they returned home to find an oak tree lying right through the middle of their house.

The catastrophe happened when a 90ft crane that had been removing the 150-year-old tree toppled backwards into Michelle and Kevin McCarthy's home in Santa Rosa, California, splitting the house in half.
No one was in the house or injured when the accident occurred on Monday afternoon. A dog in the garage was also unharmed, according to the Santa Rosa Fire Department.

hope the general liabilty was paid
to big of a pick or a flipper. i see it all the time with climbers in the area. whenever the jib is on a big crane you have got to be super careful. it can bring your picks down into the hundreds and if the load swings away from the crane

atleast they didnt crack the driveway parking back like that.

Ive never had anything to do with cranes etc but i was wondering, dont they have safety mechanism to stop them pulling an overloaded weight when the jib is at a certain angle. sort of similar to an ewp??

Those things have all kinds of bells and whistles. The problem is the operator not so much the tree guy. With our reputation who would listen to us right. I have a feeling that the weight of the log was never discussed or grossly underestimated. How many places are there on the e-net with wood weight, estimate calculators. Stirmantrees is right. The truck isn't close to the load either. Yeah driveways crack so he parks out in the street because hes got a Stinger he can extend looking at the picture his boom had to be at a 45 degree angle Me, ah I like a crane guy that flys house truss. They tend to be really quick and smooth because of their high production ratio.

problem is the tree is holding the actual weight until the cutter releases it from the trunk. then at 20 feet above the ground, its too late to do anything.
