Default Council puts out warning for rogue tree loppers

I like reading articles like this, certainly have not read one here where I live!

Page 9 says it all.

http://www.banyule.vic.gov.au/Assets...ber%202006.pdf
Quote:
Residents are advised to beware of rogue tree loppers
who are destroying Banyule’s leafy character.
Council is aware of unskilled contractors who have
canvassed for tree work in Banyule’s leafy suburbs and
proceeded to remove or damage trees.
Where this has occurred it has led to substantial fines to
the contractor and the land owner – who is ultimately
responsible.
Trees are very important to the Banyule community as
they are integral to biodiversity, provide habitat and are a
key element of neighbourhood character.
Trees may live for many decades or even centuries, but
like all assets they need routine maintenance to maximise
their usefulness and longevity.
A qualified arborist is familiar with the Australian Standard
for Pruning of Amenity Trees and will ensure that all works
conform to that standard.
Most professional arborists are members of the
International Society of Arboriculture which ensures that
arborists are up-to-date with the latest industry standards
and techniques.
It is recommended that residents engage qualified arborists
for tree works and should always check with Council’s
Development Planning Department to see if a permit is
required or call 9490 4222.

I wish the township where I am at would care that much to have laws past toward protecting are landscape. Here they coud care less and just look at people standing up as trouble makers I am going to try and write the local gov on this matter and see what the have to say.

I urge you all to get active in this area. The local Logan City Council here can make laws quickly. Below is the prosecution of an itinerant trader. I have been approached by this trader personally a few times ... they sell stereo equipment and speakers out of their van.

If they pull up at the lights near you they have a go, they claim to have invoices and it's additional over ordered stock selling half price.

Now I was chatting to a knowledgeable local business man and queried why the council can protect retailers by busting this style of doorknocker but not the same in the tree business?

He said it was a matter of scales of economy. Imagine the large retailers start bitching when you get a bunch of rogues selling out of their cars, not paying the big rent or overheads undercutting their livelihood ... there's big business and big money at stake. We are just no-bodies.

But it goes to show that regulations and licences are easy to implement. This isn't rocket science or reinventing the wheel it's just good management. And if you want to pursue a career in the tree industry .... then like many other industries get registered, licenced, certified and do a proper job not rip people off and destroy their trees and property.

Council cracks down on itinerant vendors through courts

Wednesday, May 17, 2006
---------------------------
Logan City Council has sent a clear message that illegal itinerant vendors are not welcome in the city, with a successful prosecution in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court last month.

Retro Distributors Pty Ltd has been fined $4,500 plus $315.40 costs, after pleading guilty to illegally selling goods without a licence.

Health & City Standards Committee Chairperson, Councillor Phil Pidgeon, said the operators had been illegally selling stereo systems from a van in the Hyperdome car park.

"We first received complaints about this activity back in 2004, and subsequent prosecution proceedings in 2005 resulted in Retro Distributors having to pay $4,236 to Council ($3000 fine and $1,236 in costs)," Cr Pidgeon said.

"Last August Council received more complaints, and investigations revealed the same business had returned, so Council again initiated court proceedings.

"This is the second successful prosecution we've had of an unlicensed itinerant vendor since Council introduced Local Law 9 (licensing).

"I would advise anybody buying goods to make sure they are from reputable legal sellers," he said.

Rogue tree surgeons face the chop

Councils warn Lincolnshire residents about rogue tree surgeons

Quote:
Rogue tree surgeons are blighting Lincolnshire with shoddy workmanship and illegal dealings, councils are warning.

People across Lincolnshire are being warned by councils and professionals to watch out for untrained tree surgeons offering discount services.

The Echo reported earlier in the year how the bogus callers were putting residents at risk of a £20,000 fine by chopping down protected trees.

Qualified tree surgeon Jacob English said he thought the crooks might be coming out of the woodwork now because of the recession.

"There are a lot of people suffering from the economic down turn and I think people are doing it now as a way of making money.

"It can be appealing because they do it cheaper than we would but the work they do will be poor and they won't have the insurance they need."

Mr English, who set up The English Tree Company after qualifying from the Riseholme campus of the University of Lincoln said the illegal tree surgeons were also eating into legitimate businesses.

"We were set up two months ago so it is hard to see an impact now but I'm sure in the long run it will have an effect."

Graham Penn, Doorstep crime co-ordinator for Lincolnshire trading Standards, said: "Rogue traders will often use gardening as a means of exploiting vulnerable residents.

"Recently a gang quoted a Lincolnshire resident £250 to lop trees and then demanded £750, saying the quote was £250 per tree and they had lopped 3 trees.

"They often use gardening as a method of gaining trust and then commit distraction burglary when an opportunity arises they sell information of their targets on to other gangs as well."

Its so hard to compete.
