Arrow Case study at Springwood Church

I live next door to this place so I know it pretty well.

There's been a huge new hall built and a carpark extension, lots of trees removed but some "saved".

I ducked out today to get the pictures to write the story.

There's a lot of pictures on their website about this event.

The tree on the right in both of these pictures off their website remained, it will be good to see over the years how it fairs along with a couple others down the back.

These were in a paddock prior. The address is 117 to 121 Barbaralla Drive Springwood QLD if you want to use Nearmap which has a timeline to see the action.

Now comes my pictures with close ups of the trunk going into the ground and the canopy.

The trees already had deadwood and dieback, and remember it has been raining here a lot! I think the area around the trees was finalised about December.

These trees at the back had a lot of fill put around them.

And here's the tree in the carpark.

I saw those trees in the site whilst the workmen were there as i climbed a tree not far away and they had trucks parked under them next to the trunk and i questioned then if they were being kept.

The demise of this tree does not surprise me at all, it showed signs of problems imo. Out of curiosity was this area inundated in the recent floods ? Apart from the construction work were there any other stressors this tree had to deal with ?

Nope, just construction work.

I have recently seen a few similar sized gum top box die rapidly (near here in subtropical Qld) a lot like this but ours did not have the construction interference. very wet soil + phytophthora was the verdict offered by the good pathologist Dr from a nearby University. Ours had total death of basal cambium, no other visible symptoms obvious. They were removed before I could get back and better look and missed the stump grinding also. So keen on what you observe at Springwood.

Is that tallowwood?

cheers

Sure is, but death has nothing to do with fungal pathogens.

could be lack of enough air to the roots actually.
all that addition of asphalt over the root zone most likely compacted the soil around the roots cutting off air supply.
could also be foul play. maybe the loppers poisoned it after removing the other trees so they could make more money in the future?

Sigh,, well to share your pain n show your not alone with poor design n protection practice.

Site regrade levels up to 1.5 meters of fill and now they are building on this. I canna believe allowed to construct homes on dumped fill over a natural water flow land. Home stumps will sink while slabs will float and all will loose.
Oh the tree's yup they be dead.
