Default Cabbage Tree Butcher Fifeshire Rock Nelson NZ

Well came across this today.

Some pissed guys kayak out to a rock, one guy climbs it and rips off the cabbage tree that's on top of it.

There's a few stories but what intrigues me is this.

From 'Tree-butcher' was drunk, court hears - New Zealand news on Stuff.co.nz

Quote:
Judge Richard Russell remanded Ellery on bail until July 22 to allow for a pre-sentence report, alcohol and drug assessment and a report on his suitability for community detention or community work.
Like these NZ cops are tough, detention for doing that?

But then there's this story.

From Fifeshire Rock raid raises ownership dilemma - Local News - The Nelson Mail

Quote:
Acting Senior Sergeant Kevin Tiernan of Nelson police said investigations into Friday's vandalism had revealed no one seems to know who actually has authority over the landmark.

"I've made inquiries with the Department of Conservation and Nelson City Council about who owns the Fifeshire Rock ... doesn't appear that it is DOC and it's almost definitely not Nelson City Council.

"It may come under the harbour board but they don't think so, it may still come under DOC with a question mark if it was considered part of the seabed and foreshore."

He said there was even a suggestion it could be classed as unoccupied crown land, which by default would see it fall under the control of Land Information New Zealand.

Department of Conservation spokeswoman Trish Grant said as there was no certificate of title for Fifeshire Rock, they needed to check legislation such as the Foreshore and Seabed Act and the Nelson Harbour Act to see whether or not the department owned it.
Quick, stick ya flag on there and claim it.

And here's a few pics of the rock and the tree the larakins busted.

They'd be better off sticking an artificial one on that rock with a light house.
