Hello from Oregon. Just a quick view of the neighbor's house from a white oak in our yard. Wondering if anyone had some cat rescue stories. Last edited by Jeff Darby; 6th May 2009 at 12:14 PM. |

If you scroll down through it, there are some rescue stories in this thread: Animal Rescue + Trees, do we consider the tree? |

Eric, we live in a community that has very strict rules about cutting down trees. It's nice in many respects, but taken to extremes in many cases where you have big trees literally touching the eaves of the houses. I was actually a bit surprised by this pix, but then treeclimbers can appreciate that things look different from "up there," right? I was asking about the cats because I just joined Dan Kraus' (nearby in Seattle) cat rescue list. For those of you that don't know about it, check out his site. He's rescued over 500 cats! Only did one, Phone rang around dinner time, wife answers the phone, she tells the woman on the other end of the phone "Sure he can do that" than hands the phone to me.(Laughing) "Hello" "My cats been stuck in the tree for 3 days and will not come down I put food out for him at the base of the tree walk away for a while and than when I come back the foods gone. I think that my other cats are eating it." "Well mam the tree that the cat is in is it dead?" "No it is a big pine tree" "Ok, where are you located at" she said the town and it is about 20mi. Away. Be there in 45min.Just so you know it will cost you 75 bucks. no problem she said. Packed up the gear and arrived there on time. Well there is the cat about 50ft. up a white pine across the road and bown by a creek fired the big shot up to a good limb, through the pack on and up I go. Thinking to myself man I really hate cats also thinking what if the cat hates me too. Oh well make it to the cat, Through the gloves on grabbed the cat and bang! the little fur ball lays in to my arms with all his switch blades nothing to bad but 50ft up sucks managed to get ole fluffy in the sack and down we came it all worked out.Picked up some tree work and a 50 dollar tip |

Treerat and Newguy, thanks for the stories. Now I see why Dan sewed a heavy duty glove into a laundry bag for grabbing the cat. You can check out his cat rescuers guide and a picture of it at: http://www.catinatreerescue.com/view...cfm?news_id=30 |

a good buddy of mine was called in to a rescue, charged them 180 bucks. cat was half way up a 120-150 ft douglas fir. the whole neighborhood came out to watch. he had a burlap sack and good gloves. as he climbed the cat climbed. had to go to about 100' before he caught the cat. when he got to it he tried to put it in the bag and be nice. the cat launched at him attacked his face and chest. kitty went out of the tree, hit several branches on the way. landed in the yard in front of 20+ people (kids and all) landed hard got up and booked it. they never saw the cat again.

Cat rescue business has been hot this week, well cold hot. Yesterday I climbed 65 feet up a big fir tree to rescue Kala what had been up there about 7 days. It was raining. When I got the the 50 foot level heavy winds kicked up and the tree started swaying. Almost when down, but decided to say a prayer and proceed. When I was 4 feet from Kala she decided to come down to me, but she tried to do it forward instead of backward...fell right into my lap and I had her bagged in 30 seconds. Ended up being a cold wet rescue. TODAY I got another call from a disabled man who wanted me to rescue his cat Luke from a tree. Luke, the biggest cat I have ever snagged was perched on a very skinny limb about 6 feet from the top of a 45' fir tree. It was a skinny tree and I had to be very careful. Upon reaching Luke, He decided to move out on the skinny limb a little farther and I could see the word "jump" written all over his face. So I made a quick grab behind the neck and snagged him. Took a while to bag him since he want to offer a little resistance but soon he was on his way down attached to my throw line. |

I find the rope bag a very efficient way of decending a cat out of a tree, also works on lizzards, snakes, kids balls, boomerangs oh and small drop bears they complain alot (apart from the balls and boomerangs) but the tie at the top holds them in there tight til the groundie gets it then the fun starts and your usually 10 meters above watching said groundie get clawed and bit, a very funny part of the day

No but have rescued a kookaburra. Hanging upside down with its leg jambed in a fork. Must of over cooked the landing after a night on the town. Must of been hungry as he didn't mind chewing on my finger. Anyway after 3 days of monitoring and the "customer" ringing me nightly with updates it was safely released.
