Default Another Tree Vandal Attack!

Aggghhh!

Man I'm 'ed off at this one!

We spent over a month straight working in here to prepare these trees for the ropes course installation. As seen on TV http://www.youtube.com/user/trevmcrev?feature=mhum#p/u/6/GOqhfejz34M
Vandals cause $1 million tree damage in Belgrave | Herald Sun

Quote:
VANDALS have caused more than $1 million damage to heritage listed trees in Melbourne's outer east.

It is believed vandals used an axe and chainsaw to chop around the bast of the two $500,000 Mountain Ash trees in Belgrave.

Police believe the heritage listed trees, on the grounds of a bed and breakfast accomodation in Old Monbulk Rd, were vandalised between 6pm Tuesday night and 9am Wednesday.

The damaged trees were used to support a $200,000 ropes obstacle course set up on the property and are essential for structural support.

At this stage, it is unknown if the trees will survive the damage.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation unit detectives would like to speak with anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the damage.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit CSA National :: Home.
This is on the back of another similar incident only a month ago

Does anyone know who was involved in the bridge grafting for the Separation Tree at the Bot Gardens?

Seems like these fellows thought to save you some removal time Trev. Sounds to me like you're going to have to pre-install web cams on jobs you set up just to protect the trees. When you find these people, maybe you could hang them out to dry for a few days in the trees -- give them a different perspective.

It is incredible what people deliberately do to destroy life and beauty. I hope the trees can be bridge grafted and saved.

Hmmm, fancy letting a ropes course get installed in heritage trees for starters? I find that a little odd.

Could also be commercial sabotage ... disgruntled employee etc.

Motive is the question.

I think it took nearly 3 years in the planning to get permission to construct the course. The significance of the trees was a big factor. Thing is though, these trees are in like a lost piece of forest, an abandoned arboretum, unseen by anyone, left to their own devices (a good thing) but also in an area being overgrown with weed species & thick undergrowth.

There was a lot of objection by neighbouring property owners, but it got approval through VCAT based on the trees likely to be better cared for & enjoyed by more people than they have in the last 70 years.

I think it was more likely a crazy neighbour who just doesn't want the facility up there. Folk living up in the hills tend to do so for the solitude and don't like a tourist attraction built near their backyard.

How ironic, rescue the trees from their natural fate with a ropes course.

In some places they have fences and exclusion zones, maximise the tree's life span is the goal. Here they consider "enjoyed" and attach things to the trees for the masses to climb.

Who's right isn't the issue, but what is?

What is ..... is the fact that the trees have now been ringbarked. And that alone shows why it is important to keep things low key like the Grove of Titans and the location of the Wollemi pines

Watched it on the late news last night, what a low act, it showed the damage, they certainly set out to kill the trees.

It was interesting that the media linked it to the attack on the trees at the Botanical Gardens recently. I hope that it's a coincidence, not some mongrel starting to get their kicks from seeing it on the news.

I'd put them in the same category as arsonists that set fire to the bush, then get their kicks from watching it on television.

I think they are lower than animals really, hope it comes back on them somehow.....
