Am I still an arborist if I do line work? Cause I dont feel like one, not very tree freindly work.

I know, it has to be done, but damm, ive seen some ugly trees that people have done, makes me wonder why some councils don't just cut the big oak down and re-plant with a smaller tree, if you know what I mean?

Mushi,

Can you be a plumber, surgeon, or electrician without trade papers?? If you have level 3 you are a arborist.

You will be doing alot more trimming than 99.9% of arborists, try and trim so it looks pleasing from the ground and be more an "artist"

Hi Mushi

I was thinking about this point just the other day. What makes an Arborist?

I think someone who understands trees and knows how to care for them. Sounds like you do.

The fact you are asking the question and care about your workmanship makes you an arborist. Many actually don't care, don't know or can't be bothered. Some actually take pleasure in hacking. Those people surely are not arborists but merely tree cutters whether they have a certificate or not.

Cheers

Funny you mention this Mushi, before i got let go tuesday a kid that was apprenticing with me asked a similar question,he asked"what makes a good climber in your book Bill?"

I said,if you can do the job without killing a groundie, yourself or causing property damage and you're proud of your work then your a good climber in my book, regardless of your technique, your only as good as you let yourself be.

I agonized on this point for a while as well, I tried to mentally avoid the question, so I am assuming you felt the same way as
i did when I first seen this question and felt the passion of the poster.

Mushi,

Can you be a plumber, surgeon, or electrician without trade papers?? If you have level 3 you are a arborist

I used three trades as examples here, I will pick one to compare a little more closely, a plumber, one of my trades is a structuall welder fabricator/boilermaker.

I know how to lay copper piping used in homes for their water supply, I know times have moved on and more and more they are using a composite tubing, but we will stay with the copper tubing I can replace and braze up this tubing properly, and it will not leak and last as long as any tradesman work out there, does this make me a plumber?..No way! So yes you can have the passion and the ability, however you also need the paperwork to be called a plumber..or an arborist.

Mushi,
My advice to you is go get qualified, then you will have no doubt in your mind, you will be a arborist, you sound like some one I would employ with your passion for your work.

If it makes your heart ache - and you're qualified - you're still an arborist. I just wouldn't admit to the line work in some places!

In the end we all have to pay the bills. Try not to get hardened to bad pruning. Keep you standards - perhaps even try and get some of the other guys interested in the health of the trees.

When i did line clearance[most of the 3 years i had my buisness,i sub contracted]I got along so well with the line foreman that even though we were required to where spikes, unless the tree trunk was withing 12" of the wires,he let me take my time and make good pruning cuts, and let me teach the guys the right way to prune, most took on to good pruneing, but there was a couple that just kinda laughed it off.
