Default Aerial Rescue in progress...

From The Age news website.

Injured tree lopper hanging at Beaconhills Country Golf Club

Injured tree lopper hanging metres off ground
Stacey Lobo
November 3, 2008 - 1:12PM
A tree lopper is hanging by ropes attached to his chest 7.5 metres off the ground after falling while working at a golf club in Melbourne's south-east.

- Man dangling from tree
- More than seven metres off the ground
- Rescue operation underway

He was slipping in and out of consciousness while suspended off the ground near the Upper Beaconsfield course's 14th hole Mr Haynes said.

Emergency services personnel are trying to rescue the man with the aid of a cherry picker.

Mr Haynes said six firefighters would attempt a "high-angle rescue" using ropes and pulleys if this failed to work.

Sad, it is. If he was working with a proper crew, a mate would have been able to get him rescued within 5 minutes...unless there's power lines involved.

True, Here in Australia you are taught aerial rescue as a part of your training for level two and level three. You actually go out into the trees and practice various senario's.

I wonder how you "fall" when there's supposed to be no slack in the system?

Unless he took a swing and clobbered the trunk.

I smell a rat, something is not right. Ropes attached to his chest? WTF sort of harness is that?

Branch walking slip perhaps?? Too much lifeline slack and its "George of the Jungle" time. Or maybe he chose a bad set up point for his cambian saver.

As to the ropes from his chest thing.. wouldnt be the first tme the media got their proverbial wires crossed.

Hope he gets down safe.

It's in AceMasters territory. I wonder if he can get any details.
More details would be good. We are all well aware of aerial rescue in theory, but the need here was real, and it sounds like there was nothing except wait for emergency services.

It was at a golf club, so it should be professionals rather than a homeowner gone wrong. But could be a know-all grounds staff who thinks he can do trees too, without proper training or equipment.

Just guessing out loud here.

Hope the outcome was OK.

A link to this goings on would be helpful. If you could provide it for us please. Also this could be posted in our Tree Industry injuries, accidents, and fatalities Forum. Thanks. Bruce.

An update on this!! I saw this on a TV show (emergency mediacl procedures- or something close to that). The guy was cutting a large branch and didnt put any wing/ hing cuts below his cut and didnt make the cut properly (not far enough around on his undercut) as a result it tore past the undercut and the tear out went past his lanyard and pulled (him quite suddenly) inot the trunk, enede up losing 1.5L of blood into his stomach cavity from a ruputured spleen, (missed that bit but assumed he may have lost his spleen- as ruptures are hard to repair), a perforated kidney and to broken ribs for his trouble. Obviously didnt have any one else there trained in aerial rescue as they would have been able to get up and cut the block free and release him. Apparently it took 2 hours to stabilise him (in the tree) and get him down. and all they referred to him as was a tree lopper- No mention of arborist any where in the show. Took him 2 months to recover and the last word on the show was that he returned to work 2 months later but not as a tree lopper!!
Probably a good thing! great that he is still alive and great he is no longer LOPPING TREES!!!

Would first thoughts not be to call a professional tree crew in to help out a person in need? We generally all know how to perform aerial rescues?
I know I would certainly rush to the aid of someone in that situation.

Glad to see he survived the injuries, hope it doesn't shake him up too badly.

Stay safe people!

yeah they eneded up putting this vest looking thing with flat metal bars inserted sort of like a back brace. yeah was a nicholi he said something like aww i gave it an undercut first then when she went just pulled me in obviously de-laminated...dang....dont sure of the situation but it was definetly on a golf course....looked like there was plenty of room to fell the tree... who knows but i was definetly agree a good crew would have had him down in minutes, the emt guys took like well over an hour to get him down, they did well to rescue a guy with those injuries.

Yeah Cole I did Funny shit! his old man was like yeah we'll get you back to work but you wont be climbing any more trees for a living (well not an exact quote but that was definitely the jist of it) Probably a good thing, I dont want to right the guy off (kinda unprofessional considering we dont know who he is or what the circumstances were) BUT!!!! there has to be a point at which we realise that people like this are just too blarzey (anyone who knows how the f to spell that word properly feel free to let me know) and dont belong in the world of todays modern arborist. I witnessed a similar thing happen to a contractor working for me in Tamworth many years ago when I was just a youn arboricultural pup, cutting a big pepper tree branch and didint scarf it deep enough so it tore down the branch under the climbers pole strap pulling him into tree so f#2$ing hard! lucky for him the piece broke off when it met resistance and other then some bruising to his sternum and abs and of course a serious bruise to his pride (and Rob! if your reading this well sorry dude but I had to tell em!). But could have been similar and could very well have been a rescue.

I would like to start a ne wthread RE aerial Rescue and working in conjunction with Emergency services so keep an eye out for that.
