Ever think back to your novice days and wonder how you got out of some situations alive? I have 2 that cause me to wonder. Taking down a large squiggly, I had set my rope high in the morning and got one side of the tree down. I then started on the othe side, over loaded it and brought the fork and several other branches down on top of me. Actually, when it all settled, it was like I was in a roll cage with my nose about 30mm from the chain, engine still running, finger on the trigger. Had to cut my way out. The other time was a leaner gum I was cutting 6m up, to keep it short of a fence. Didn't go deep enough on the scaff and she tore in 1/2 downwards (barbers chair?). Slow motion the harness sucks me into the tree then proceeds to try and snap me in half. Very unpleasant. Here's the AoG. Right when I think it's "goodnite Ilean"(like making those "bungie jumping" groans and "do I cut my harness?" type questions) , the top hangs up in another tree. Still keep replaying the "before scaff" video in my head and can't see the tree being that close. Make sure my scaffs are nice and deep now. |

when i first started climbing i was doing a removal and was going well, till i started snatching the wood out. After doing my step cuts i hung my saw up and pushed the log away with 1 hand on the log and one hand on the trunk when the log came down it crushed my hand between the log and the trunk my hand puffed up and started tuning blue. I thought my climbing days were over before i had even begun. 4 weeks later my hand was good as new now i always know where my hands are when rigging.

Ever had a mattock sucked into a stump grinder? Its not the greatest feeling in the world. Just this week had a great retard moment. Rigged up branch, about a 1.5m long and about as thick as my thigh. After the cut I have the bright idea of putting the chainbrake on right above the cut, of course the branch comes back in and smashes my finger and thumb. The final result of that was lots of pain for a few minutes and a small chunk of meat missing from my finger, thought it was going to break my fingers.
