Pair injured in tree-lopping accidents

March 25, 2009 - 2:02PM

Two men cutting down trees are in hospital after being seriously injured in separate accidents, one involving a chainsaw, in Victoria.

A 59-year-old Jacana man, in Melbourne's west, was trimming the branches of a tree on his property with a chainsaw when it kicked back and slashed him across the chest about 1pm.

The man was able to lower himself to the ground and call an ambulance.

`The man was understandably in significant pain, and was also given a large amount of pain relief through (a) drip," intensive care paramedic Rob Voss said.

The man was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with chest injuries in a serious but stable condition.

In a separate incident, a tree lopper working in Tyabb, on the Mornington Peninsula, is in a critical condition after falling 20 metres from a tree.

Paramedics found the 34-year-old lying on logs on the ground when they arrived just after 11am.

"Paramedics were concerned about an unstable tree branch near where the man had been working, so we had to move him out of danger," intensive care paramedic Sean Black said.

"A neck brace was fitted given the potential for spinal injuries, and he was strapped to a spine board."

The man suffered head injuries, extensive internal injuries and fractures and was flown to The Alfred hospital.

The climber that fell 20M in Tyabb has passed away, he died 11PM on the day of the fall. Age 34, this information has come through the industry not the media I trust it is accurate.

very sad indeed. this should be a wake up call to all climbers. the old saying goes "there are old climbers, and bold climbers, but there are no old, bold climbers. it always hits home when i hear horror stories like the one above, i also let the boys at work know what has happened in hopes to keep them on there toes. i work with both of my younger brothers and just cant imagine how any of us would feel if a tragic mistake happened. be safe Tree World, and don't ever let something like this happen to you

RIP we all have accidents but a 20 meter fall is just too far for a body to handle especially onto a log pile, its incidents like that that put our insurance up.
I try not to one hand cut with my ms200t but sometimes you just have to but i am always on the other side of a large piece before i do or at full stretch on a limb walk.

Regarding the climber that died at Tyabb, information is as follows
-tree could have been free felled.
-witness stated, climber was using small top handled saw.
-there were no lines in the tree, no life lines.
-harness was cut off the climber by Ambulance.
-harness had one pole line.
-the attachment hook on the pole line had a small ring(this was his tool attachment point off his harness) he attached to the tool ring on his harness.
-large stubs remain.
-work care had four vehicles inspecting accident.

Ekka I have the name of the tree service company but will not post.

Keep safe brothers.

I'll embed the pics here.

So for him to fall that distance he was up the top.

Even if he was hooked into a tool ring he must have slipped, taken a fall for enough energy to be put into breaking that ring.

Look, honestly.

A tree like that without spikes is on the cards.

Without 2 lines most on the cards, it's near on a ladder!

There's a lot of people who'd 1 flip line that tree spikeless, not saying rights or wrongs but have a look, it's piss easy.

I would have dropped the tree though, but who knows what their plans were, maybe a pose off, maybe they didn't want to get the truck bogged ... we don't know ... but clipping into a tool ring is very amateur (no disrespect).

I reckon, and just a guess.

He was taking the head out, it shook a little and he got dislodged. Now whether his pole belt flipped over the top of the trunk and he fell or he fell and caught a limb then the ring broke I dont know.

Maybe they were using that easy tree as a training thing, sent up a green guy to get some experience? Shit, chances of falling and making it to the ground with one flip line (done up correctly) is a bit remote ... the other risk is the branch interchanges ... maybe he was unhooked at an interchange and slipped? I take 2 flip lines or a long flip line with prussik if you got interchanges, none of this elbow hang in there stuff. But was interchanges necessary? You just cut off the branch in the way and keep on flipping up!

The rest of the crew know the truth.

Okay,if i were the one about to remove that trees, lets say it was being removed for training purposes,i'm gonna drop all the limbs on the way up,using a jump cut, then at the top, leave a stub that angles upward, about a foot long, tie in with my climbline, ten set my flipline with a wrap, bury one spike deep keeping hat leg straight, then bbend my other leg,and bring it up to keep my flipline taut.Oh and snap the chain brake as soon as it starts going over.

I wonder if he clipped into that ring by accident or didn't know the difference through a lack of experience or training... We'll never know.

Visual check of proper connection when you clip on is vital.

I wonder whether he was a novice self employed, self trained tree worker or worked for a company that had no idea of safe climbing techniques or training...

Lets hope that someone else gets a lesson out of this loss.

Thanks Paul for reporting what you know.

I don't think you have used the pro grade Oregon double guard tips , I think your talking about the consumer laminated small tipped bars, now those don't take the punishment.
When I logged for a living for a large forestry company, they had strict policy "small nose only". Our safety record was excellent , if there was an accident someone getting cut , it wasn't from a kickback. And we cut hundreds of cords of wood with one of those tips, felling, limbing and topping.
Another good small tip bar is the Windsor Mini-Pro.

For a start none of us here are wanks as you say, But I can understand you being upset about your mate, the very nature of forums, and people in general, they will speculate about how it happened, BUT now that you, Whitey, have come forward and told us all you were friends you might like to tell us what really did happen?, were you there?, if there was neglect from any one involved here's your chance to post it on an international Arborist's forum.

Dear Whitey, please understand there is no disrespect here and I understand your response and I am sorry for this mans family and if anything was said that upset anyone, sorry also, it was not meant as criticism, the response was "what happened". The tree industry is very close and it was a shock to everyone.
Paul.
