| ![]() i enjoy caving, ice climbing, bouldering at the gym, and huge cliff faces. unfortunately trees are one of the smaller things i love ta climb, trees are also the only climbs that pay me my last ice climb outing i was pounded in a small avalanche me and my bro were in search of a nice ice face in the dax of NY and about 3 miles in we were hit. thank god we both came out alive. to make a long story short my bro broke his leg and we needed ta call fer help. never did make it to the face, now I'm too skeert ta go trekking threw the snow covered MTS. now that i have 2 children my and a wife that need me, my big adventuress outings are down to about nothing

Rjukan is supposed to be the best place for ice climbing in North-Europe. Rjukan is also known as the place where the famous heavy water was produced during WW2. I have borrowed some pics. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() leif.

The burls are sleeping for a while. That one in the pics has to dry for some months. I might perhaps finish the story with another piece having dried for some years. I'll check the stock and see what I have. Thanks for asking! Leif. |

I've posted some of these on other threads, but since you asked, I'll post them again here. Some are climbing, some are caving/mine shaft spelunking. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Copper actually. The main shaft went down about 200 ft or so, pretty steep slope too. I'd not want to do it without ropes. Had to use ascenders on the way back up. From about 6 foot off the bottom of the main shaft, two smaller tunnels wrapped around off to the sides in each direction. The left side one went about 40 ft before ending in a wall. The right side one is the one that had all the timbers shoring up the ceiling. I wound myself around the timbers a good hundred feet or so till I thought I came to the end. Little wooden processing area. Found a small (18" square or so) window in the wood, crawled through it, and it kept going a good 150 feet more or so and ended in a flooded passageway. Water's full of copper sulfate, probably pretty toxic too. Alot of that right passageway was pretty tight, some spots ceiling to floor only 20 inches or so, then it'd open back up again. Alot of it was on a slant, taking advantage of the natural fault lines in the rock. I solo'd it, hour and 15 mins or so, and had ppl up above waiting, and a backup plan in place. (I dont recommend solo spelunking, but I made contingencies) I custom welded a ground spike anchor point since there was nothing to tie-off to up above the entrance. There was a good 20 ft vertical drop to the entrance of the mine. Here are some pics of that processing area, and the flooded passageway. You can see the copper sulphate lying on the surface of the water. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Therrrin, do you have techniques for checking that the air would be good in the bottom of that mine shaft? Budgies, perhaps? I'm interested to check out old shafts, but the air bothers me. It would be a pain in the arse to asphyxiate down there, expecially if other people were going to come looking. |

MSA makes several nice multi-gas detectors. They can check for safe levels of O2, CO2, Hydrogen, other flammable gasses, etc etc.... depending on which sensors you have on which model. My friend had a 4 gas detector by them that we used for spelunking mines up around the Iron Mountain area of the San Gabriel mtns. Or you could take a parakeet along in a cage =) |

| Crazy or not, I don't know. I could never try these things. But recently a woman died there. A Finnish couple fell 100 m down. She died, he was badly injured. It was in the afternoon, they were probably exhausted after a long day`s climbing. The report suggests that they made a mistake with the ropes. Leif. I might have to get myself a gas detector some day. Exploring old mines without worrying about the gas would be reallly cool. I've never heard the phrase spelunking, before, is it only in relation to mine shafts, or caves as well? |

The old miners brought with them a canary bird. If the bird died, they had to run! Oh sorry, I see Therrin has the same idea. Leif. |

I have just found a video called "Iceclimbing and music." It's from the place Rjukan (heavy water, WW2), same place and waterfalls as I have posted pics from earlier. Hope the link works. NRK Nett-TV - hastighetsmåling Leif. |

Main Entry: spe·lunk·ing : the hobby or practice of exploring caves Not to be confused with a troglodyte of course ![]() Main Entry: trog·lo·dyte 1 : a member of any of various peoples (as in antiquity) who lived or were reputed to live chiefly in caves 2 : a person characterized by reclusive habits or outmoded or reactionary attitudes Funny thing is, I much prefer small/tight spaces to broad open places. I don't have agoraphobia or anything, I just prefer tunnels and such. I'd rather have a house with 90% of its volume underground than a sprawling ranch house.
