Default Trees near creeks

Theres a picture in Matheney & Clarke of a tree located on a creek-bank, captioned along the lines indicating the rooting pattern of the tree will typically have “large tree roots (oriented) to run parallel to the banks and (be) quite shallow". (Ref: Matheney N.B., ‘Trees & Development: A Technical Guide…” 1998).

The theoretical symmetric root-plate scenario of a tree is such a location, therefore, would be unlikely.

Here some pics showing whats really going on.

Now what are you doing with those trees?

I remember some rippers on the side of the Murray, huge river gums and half the root flare in mid air, spectacular, however erosion of the bank also has a lot to do with it.

The erosion at this Public Reserve is the result of increased urban run-off, exacerbated by the impacts from high amenity use (fishing). In several places steps were cut into the banks for easier access (I only found 1 timber sleeper still there). It is estuarine & under-tidal influence.

There is a combination of civil works and vegetation rehabilitation proposed for this site....armouring the inter-tidal zone (abt 2m high), reducing batter to 1 in 3 in some areas, and vegetation reconstruction. Some sections will receive only revegetation treatment.

Where batter changes are to occur, there would be excavation of the bank on the upside to the trees (six trees).

This is also EEC- Swamp Sclerophyll Forest of the Coastal Floodplains....
