Yup, I love the climbing. Also, I ordered the baumvelo climbers from Grube in Germany. Should be here in 30 days or so. I'll be able to zip up and down the trees that are smooth to trim the crowns quicker than snot.

yup, I've been looking at how some of the guys go top down... I like that technique. Safer and less shit falling in my face. These washingtonias skirts were all pretty beat up by hurricanes, one good thing about Florida palm skirts... they don't tend to get that big without losing all the fans from 200mph winds.

I've been doing more of them lately also. I charge $195.00 and up per if the skirts are over three years old.

Hard to get those sorts of dollars on the jobs here. Be good to see and hear about those climbers in real action. I just wonder how that much crap ended up on the house roof and you were close to the bottom?

The HO, also a close friend asked me to drop the fronds down to the roof once I moved up to that level, to spare the fern garden/water feature at the bottom of the tree. His wife was very pleased with the results and the lack of damage to the Aussie fern trees she has. Also the roof was easier to sweep off afterwards. As soon as I get the Baumvelo climbers I'll start documenting them. Also, pricing... I've been thinking about a $30 per tree +$20/Hr. I think this would enable me to cover straight trim jobs as well as cleaning the entire stem or beard with fair pricing. The job above was a full cleaning, from the bottom up of the short husks, the beard started at about 25' on the 50' tree. Total cleaning/trimming time 4.5 hrs, 30+90=$120.00 120/4.5= $26.66/hr and the HO did the roof clean up, dropping the fronds down to a large trailer. I'm sure this isn't the best way to charge for my time, but I'm still learning.

Here are my thoughts on pricing. Your climbers will cost about $3000.00 after shipping. The climbers as well as everything else, (ropes, chainsaws, truck, ect) has a life. To make this easy, lets say one year and you need to replace it, (asset recovery). To recover/replace this asset you need to charge $1.45 per hour, so now you're down to 25.21. Add all the other assets that need to be recovered/replaced and well you see were this is going. I've been in bussiness 17 years. I've seen many companys come and go. The biggest reason they fail...they forget they need to replace equipment that wears out. My truck needs replaced in 5 years, my chainsaws every 4, and my ropes every year. Even if I can make my equipment last longer at least I have the money to replace it when needed. Lets not even get into gas prices, insurance, man power, ect. jm2cents

The going price for coconut palms down here is 65.00 per tree. The wash palm is a big workmans comp tree, people getting poked all the time. Its a hazorduos tree to clean, so it makes sence you need to charge more. Canary island dates can get around $250.00 each because of those needles. jm2c

A word of caution though, if you work with a crew of 2+ people on these types of jobs either take 2 or more sets of gloves or don't take yours along because if you're the only one with the welders gloves the rest will stand back and watch you work ![]()
