Default Some chipping with the new crew

Did some chipping and hauling today. The home owner has been taking pics and videos of the whole process, even burned them to a disc for me.

It's a 25hp Dosko chipper with a 2 cyl Onan engine.
Pretty crappy on power. Makes ya work for it.

damn man, you started as a real newbie and now you already have a full scale crew? How cool is that? Business must be thriving for you... Things out here are goin' great and I'm expecting a bit of a few slow weeks after this month.

25 HP for a chipper is not very much, and it looks as tough the feed opening is really high from the ground or am I looking at it wrong?

yeah the opening is pretty high up. Thankfully we were only feeding pine into it and the stuff was relatively light.

I'm working on getting matching uniforms for the guys.

OK I think I am pretty much close to being were you are with your company Therrin . Only I have no crew and I still work another full time job . I was just wondering were do get most of your work advertising , word of mouth .Are these guys a full time crew ? do you pay benefits-taxes for these guys , or do you just pay cash and 1099 . Do have work to keep you and your crew busy year round ?

osb_mail,

I use up to 3 or 4 guys, but 2 of them regularly. I work full time, they work part time right now, but whenever I can afford to have them, I get at least one of them (the young strong guy), and more as needed. I try to give him work even on stuff I could do by myself; and it saves my back and helps him stay motivated.

I provide their PPE and at the moment. Kyle isn't using saws or anything, just all the other groundie stuff. Brian runs his own service on the side, but mostly smaller stuff so he's trusted with saws and ropes and such when he works for me.

At the moment they're being paid cash... but soon I'll probably be picking up workcover. It's not cheap around here. I beleive it's like $50 on top of every $100 each employee makes.

I advertise different places around town and with different people. Hand out cards in social settings and just chatting with people and such. Roughly half my work comes from networking (word of mouth) right now.

Looking to get teeshirts made soon. Oh, I also use magnetic decals on my pickup truck and occasionally get calls in from people who see me on the road.

Pretty much all there is to my stuff so far. Just arranged for a splitter and have it on the way, next purchase is a mid-size chipper.
