Hey Phill, Sorry about the 100 questions but what did you do with the trees? Lumber? Mill it? Chip it? Also, tell us a little about how they got hooked up, did you ride the hook, climb etc.

| NO worrys ekka, we got the crane guy to lower the trees in one area where the boys cut off the branchs ready to be chiped on site then he lift the logs over to another area to be ringed up at the same time ,while that all happening(i be honest) i ride the hook , hooked on , then lower my self down ready for another tree

Are you guys not supposed to ride the hook?I'm asking because i'e never had the chance to use a crane on a takedown.

hard to say as i have heard two side of the story that you can or that you souldn't , the crane guys never seem to worry about it and i do strongly trust them too. It also save a lot of energy and time , and to hire them cranes are costly pre hour, I hate to think how worn out i be if i to climb up and down them tree at end of day

Many of you guys like to use the chain chokers while I have never seen anyone using them here but rather steel thread or canvas chokers. Seems if one link is damaged it might not be easily noticed rendering the entire choker dangerous. Also it is amazing the size of those trees in 25 to 30 years. | |

It is a crop. I get it then Phill, the growth is a good thing in most cases until someone sends one up next to a residence. We got our poplars, etc.

You are allowed to ride the crane in NZ but do it right and tie in right. Trouble with this place is too many Chiefs and not enough Indians .... churn out 1000's of non productive shiny asses from uni a year to make rules for those who work, then because it becomes a rule it's an even bigger mountain to move. Imagine having to climb to the crane tie in point for those pines? Imagine then, would you spike it on the way up or would that damage the wood? Would you then limb it on the way up or do all those rope change-overs? Or would you try to set a high line and footlock or prussik up? Now all of those things are a lot more dangerous and tiring than riding the hook, but over here we're "THE CLEVER COUNTRY" and frankly, gone too far with stupity from those who frankly wouldn't know if their ass was on fire.

Me too, white skinned non callused handed office dwellers making our rules. My crane guy told me it was illegal here now too. I could give a shit. There is some pleasure in breaking unjust laws.

Here are some more photos of another crane job, this one was a very large pine that was out of reach, no droping zone under neath , so we use the neighbors property to get the 55 ton crane in to section the tree down. It taken bout 6 to 7 hours to do. The mulch and timber had to be taken away so we got a frend who got a big truck with a hi-ab to take all the timber for free so that make life easy for us
