Our palms in this area don't have that skirt. I heard most injuries in tree work are in palms. I always wondered how that was. We have some pretty thorny ones around here that always get stuck in your arm when you cut them but nothing like that. Wow I hate palms anyway and to trim something like that..The Mexicans can have them.

I think they look good. I always like to cut the boots back too. It makes the trees look some much better. I've gotten to wear I price it both ways (boots on or trimmed) some because what was happening is the apartments would get us to do them every third or fourth year and give them to landscaping companies. I tried the rope through the top bit and got it stuck a few times ended up breaking more fronds, had to re climb and get them out after trying to pull the rope out. Now I usually just use a ladder so as not to tear loose stuff from the bottom..also gafts are hard on palms if you climb them often. After I get to the top of the ladder I use a safty and if the fronds are loose I tie a running bowline around the tree and leave about 3 ft of slack and tie it to a d ring on my saddle and climb to the top. This way you can keep the bowline as loose as your flip line but if you slide it will grab the tree and tighten up unlike the flip line. This is the only time I like the 020 styll or a light saw that can be operated with one hand. And yes you got to cut over your head and watch out for wasps and an occassional rat. By the way it is also safer to cut over your head when cranning the final stub down. I usually cut at chest height on this cause its easier however if the crane guy moves wrong he can kick the saw back at you or swing the stub into you. Anyway your palms good.

Thx for the input guys.

And yeah, I've been hearing alot more lately about guys dying while working up in palms.

Thankfully, here in Bakersfield where I'm living now, they keep the palms trimmed pretty regularly, so the skirts don't get very long. The downside, however, is that 90% of it is done by a mexican running around with a pickup truck, and trying to compete with that really sucks.

looks like good job. We do washingtonians more that we like to admit. Two flip lines can be convenient because you can flip one up higher and not struggle with it. just unclick and flick or put the weight on one and reposition the other. safety is always a good idea. I personally tie in to tall washingtonians by gettin the rope around the right angled fronds in such a manner that it cannot slip down or over the top. It is just a bear to pull the rope out as it takes about your body weight to repel but, you could have trimmed the adjascent tree in the one pick on the way down. you have to tie in on some higher angled ones to be safe.(but not to high.)
excellent job though.

I guess i tie in to most palm species now that i think about it.

Chopperlot,

to the left side of your "A" key there's a button that says "capslock". push it until the light on your keyboard goes out. Don't post anymore in all capitals.

And, I hope you're kidding about someone setting fire to a palm to try to clean the fronds. That is entirely stupid.
