How old would that have been?

Ekka they are very commonly planted in melbourne gardens. Nearly every matureish one you see though is nearly dead due to drought. I quote removing a few of these a week i reckon!

No one seems to want to believe you when you tell them its dying though. "Mature trees cant die because of no water can they?" "But its been there 30 years and i never watered it"

we have grey birch here. they normally grow in large clusters like aspens. the bark contains a keroseines like substance that makes it extremely flamable. they reach 40 feet or so then begin to die

And dont they respond well to that

Very weak compartmentalizers, esp. wall 1, shocking amounts of vertical decay from bad cuts.

Never worked on one but they are a very pretty tree...in another lifetime ago I used to see lots of birch trees through the southern parts of the Pennines, they are (in their native habitat) an inidicator or transition species, as bog or marsh land dries out birch are one of the first of the larger terrestial species to colonise the area, in fact it is the gradual colonisation process itself that helos drive the change in relative moisture levels.....pretty tree
