Houses must only be two feet above sea level. Wood frame houses that close to the gulf, bad news. Tx needs to revamp its building codes. The only house left standing was modified to take a cat 5. It's all in how they are constructed. Sad

Did you notice all the tree comp lined up?

A good bit of Galveston had homes on grade which were 8 to 12 feet above sea level.

Most of the Bolivar Peninsula had houses on stilts (pilings) and the houses started at 12 to 14 feet above grade putting the houses about 16 to 20 feet above sea level.

When Ike came ashore, it brought with it a storm surge of 20 to 27 feet above sea level.

Approximately 40 people are still missing as the cadaver dogs search the island. A couple of lucky residents rode the surge 14 miles inland and were rescued 16 and 36 hours later clinging to debris in east Galveston Bay.

The bucket trucks in the pictures were from 10 or 12 utility line clearance companies (Asplundh, Davey, Bartlettt, Trees Inc., etc.) that came from all points around the US - some of them traveling over 1,000 miles.

Electricity still is out for several hundred thousand folks. Poles, lines, transformers, even sub stations were destroyed. The cost to the electric infrastructure is in the billions. Cleanup crews are sleeping in tents under mosquito netting as the local hotels have no electricity or water until the power comes back on.

The set backs from the water were at 150 feet. The thinking is now that they need to be 300 feet back from the water.

I nearly bought some land down there a few years ago and am glad I didn't now.

It's doubtful that Bolivar Peninsula will ever be built back.
