Default Here is a before and after of a underbush clearing

I hate to do this kind of work I know the impact it has on the plants and animals that love these places but the city thought it looked unclean .So I guess everything has to look like a golf course . I did this work with a bush hogg on the front of a skid loader .before after

You're right to recognise the negative impact on all levels of life in that scrub of the clearing, but I often find the more proactive LGA's have criteria for safety of public using paths and parks and that scrub can (perhaps not in your photo eg though) provide shelter for some less desirable human species too.
Its a very hard balancing act that the responsible LGA has to make...the irresponsible ones just don't try either nuke everything irrespective or leave great big chunks of large scrub right next to paths and play areas!

I guess I could understand if this was a new york city street but this is in a small city . I do see your point boa about people hanging out in these places . But the home owners that lived next this area really nice people but they said if I had come to cut down those large trees they were going to chain themselves to the tree I just laughed at the lady and explained that I have little education trees and I know the value of them and I am not going cut them down just clean around them . I am glad to see people starting value these places but I don t like it when people get to extreme . I also always wonder what effect the skid loader ground compaction has a effect on these large trees . I sure some but do you think it would be enough to kill A large tree ??? I going throw a picture of the bullet proof tires just for fun .

Oh, like a lawnmower bed.

The mulched material stayed didn't it?

Most of that bush would resprout and grow over time so this may be a regular thing?

You're right its great to meet people who have an attachment to their local environment...shame the LGA didn't try to envolve them in the activity even in a symbolic way, it makes any works program way way more effective and successful long term.

Compaction even from foot traffic has an effect, trees have evovled in environments where such major soil compaction as limited, as the veg gets denser the compaction is reduced more and more. But clearly trees have the ability when healthy and vigorous to cope with moderate compaction no problem, your skid steer would have compacted the soil for sure, my advice to the city would have been to spray chips over the area after the work as done, but the mulched debris being spread over the soil is good.
Decompaction is good but its slow and most LGA's won't spend the $s, which one limited budgets I can understand, less expensive options include soil and root treatments of dilute seaweed extract (very cheap and very effective) There's a thread here on suger water Sugar water for trees, good or bad? Soil | Carbon | Plant Sugars | Roots
with some data on the effects of sugar on annual weeds, again cheap (relatively) enviro friendly (extremely) and beneficial to soil food web for trees

So, is that a fresh water lake there or something?

And is the new cleared path for vehicle access?

Yes, a thick layer of chips would be good, reduces compaction even if vehicles drive over.

Good pics though mate, looks lush and green. Hey, we got 17mm of rain over the last 2 days, my water tank overflowed! And that's after I pumped up 3/4's of it to the pool. So maybe a bit more green in my pics soon to.

No lake , no path .It is a propety line going to a small woods by the road . That the city thought needed cleaned up .Another reason I like these spots is they are great for morel mushrooms and ginseng to grow I figure once it gets mowed not much of a chance of them growing there anymore . I know you guys probably dont have morels in your area but they are highly prized treat around here . That getting harder and harder to find .

You're right neither morels nor ginseng grow up with me, both do grow at Stanthrope nearer to Ekka, and of course further South nearer some of the other guys.....very envious.
