Well i haven't updated in a while, so on 26th jan me the wife and kids moved out to brisbane, i have taken a job as a climber with a local business the kids are settled into a new school and the wife is happy being a nurse in CBD, the biggest problem i have found out here is the humidity while i climb, i have never sweated so much in my life.
so yesterday i was taking down a tulip oak (heritiera actinophylia) with a co dominant i worked as i normally do remove as i ascend useing a portawrap and a pulley to lower the barnches to protect the lawns and fences, now i dont know if i was distracted or dehydrated but as i go to the top i tied in as normal two points one on the other codominant and my lanyard on the upright i was reducing, so i put the gob in, put all the ropes in the right places but this is where i made the mistake, i didn't attach a tow line to the top, so the slack was taken up on the lowering rope, i started to put the back cut in and a light wind swirled in the canopy above, the next thing i know is the piece has snapped backwards and come down on me smashing me into the trunk and trapping me; so im hanging upsidedown from the tree ten meters up feeling like ive broken my leg and watching the guys lower the piece as fast and safely as they can, i took a few munites to recover then, i got myself together and took down a few more pieces but then the pain started in my leg again, so my first serious climbing accident has resulted in a torn calf muscle and a wrenched knee and a boss thats not too happy with me, so the moral of the story is keep hydrated, keep aware and always do more than you need to to be safe. im hoping for a fast recovery so i can get back to it asap as we have bills to pay.
be safe
G

Now you know what the term ... sweating my arse off really means.
I have sweat bands, high quality AND1 bands, best on the market, always take 3 shirts and usually 5litres of water.

Cramp is a problem that I get, I take special muscle relaxant tablets that aint just salt!

And when needed take a rest, just a breather you know.

One of the things I have noticed when climbing is that you dont get a real lot of help from the ground guys, no-one spotted ya did they. You get used to near running the show from the tree, frustrating but true. Working with real pro crews is a luxury around these parts I can tell you, but when you strike it you'll know it and lap it up.

Get well mate.

Thanks guys, im off for ten days initially i have an appointment with the physio next week, strong painkillers and a knee brace,
Eric i found i suffered from real bad cramp over the first few days a so i went to the doctors and he told me to take calcium and magnesium so ive been taking the tablets and no cramp climb all day and nothing amazing oh and a banana a day
I have a 1.5 litre camel pack that i climb with and five litres in the truck.
i have to say that i was doubtful of the tablets but they worked by the next day.
im working on getting better fast and the lesson will be remembered, i can't wait to get back up those trees it's what i live for.

Galbee, best wishes for a speedy and full recovery (don't rush back to long strenous climbing take your time)

Get yourself a camel pack water reservoir...I used to use one it was great, half filled with ice kept cool all day long.

Also there are cooling inserts for your climbing helmet that (since stopping full time climbing!) I have discovered are brilliant. (Google "helmet cooler")

We just finished 12 days over 40 degrees C (aprox 115 Farenheit) ending on Black Saturday. I used to try to be a hero and work through it. Now if it gets to hot I simply pack up and start again next day as early as possible, it just ain't worth it.
At least the heat here for the most part is dry (little humidity)

Around here in the summer, you have to drink lots of liquids, espically powerade and water. Its also a good idea to carry a few gallon jugs of water and dry electrolyte powder, just in case.On long climbs,i hang a gallon of water off my harness by a rope. Its usually gone in half an hour lol.

Well what a week it has been poinciana after poinciana then my first palms uuuuurrrrggggg man they are crappy, good fun though dodging the snakes possums and spiders, i have some pictures coming so eric can tear my work to pieces and tell me what i missed, i trimmed six in a row the last one was 12 meters high and so fat at the top that i could only just put my arms around it. do you guys use a chainsaw on them? cos i used my zubat hand saw and found that it was quicker for me any tips for cleaning them? the leg is fixed now (lots of massage) and im getting used to the humidity as much as you can. well take care and climb safe

A few of the climbing pics from the last few weeks with the chipper and some of the crew, including the stinking date palm burn them all i dislike them with a passion.

Thanks stirmantrees
Letigre my groundies hated that job we only had a small ish drop zone and while im cutting they dont come in until i tell them so they had shed loads to move by the time i got out what wanted, thankfully they are understanding and give me hell and abuse as often as they can like a good groundie should.
