Root pruning on a development site. Any roots over 15mm dia had to be cut and treated.

It would be more effective to have the specs for cleancutting before the excavator makes its presence felt. Once the roots are torn and fractured it is very hard to find sound timber to clean cut....hydrovac along the outermost line of the excavation then clean cut (if it retains sufficient root and soil volume for the tree)...then all excavation inside that line can continue as normal, you won't get the fractured roots.
Also I would most definately be applying Trichoderma in solution or better still in a water saving gel and sugar solution.

LOL, no more pics coz it was starting to get dark, the groundy was leaving, I had stumps to grind, load to dump and pick the kids up from after school care before 6 (it's dark here at 5pm these days you know)

However, here's the deal.

The hinge was nice and parallel, maybe 3/4" hingewood, text book stuff. (had to be due to potential insurance claim)

The entire cambium (sapwood) was compromised, like honeycomb ... however the heartwood was 100% good.

So, it wasn't like the typical scene of termite but rather some borer infestation feeding on the cambium.

Stump grinding, roots were good, I'd say 100% in tact.

So from a VTA point of view it was really UGLY

From a structural engineers point of view, OK

Moral of the story ... well there's two.

1/ Better to be safe than sorry.

2/ Never assume more than you can see, a drill test would have confirmed integrity. Just think if this were some significant tree and you felled it, no hollow, no decay, no termites..... Ooops, egg on your face.

I have mentioned this a lot before but I will say in a consulting capacity I'm starting to drill them all where there's any VTA that tells me possible decay.

Default Self Optimisation or Self Destruction

You've surely heard of these terms.

The axiom of uniform stress.

Trees are self optimising structures.

Well, some just grow till they bust! Might be a case of leave trees to themselves like these were and watch what they do, self destruct.

And not just one limb but many, not just one tree but many.

Now this happened in the cooler mild winter here, days maybe 24C and not much wind.

This one gives you an idea the size of it.

Notice the darker cracks inside

Looking closer at those cracks and there's no bark in there, they're cracks that have discoloured due to a fungi in there, found some hyphae.

And another on different tree, ends have been cleaned up.

And there's a lot more to come as there's many trees like this with many branches like this.

That 2nd last pic looks to me like it was done by the wind... Just my opinion from the pics.

There is a Euc a few blocks over from where we live, that in the Christmas Summer Storms has slits all upp the trunk from where the wind was blowing it as if it was trying to wind the tree up like a clothesline. I keep saying to myself everytime I drive past there I gotta get photos...
