I wouldn't really call it codominant, more like 2 palms grown together. BTW what type of washingtonia is it? looks like a filifera, didn't know you'll had those in NZ |

Sorry to be pedantic, but I think you would have to describe that as 'double-planted' rather than 'double-leadered' - the latter would be a much rarer beast indeed! What a pity it wasn't worth transplanting ! Cheers Phil O'dendron |

They suck those palms, palms come in doubles, triples, quads etc ... bad spot for it anyway.

Every time I do one I say "Never Again", did 2 last month, never again. I've got 30 of the things in pots ready to sell, so look out in a few years. |

Nice work Treekiwi, In the Palm Springs area of CA, i used to see W. robusta that would have an extra trunk branching out 20 -30 feet off the ground? That's the only place i've seen them like that.

That's weird Mike, get some pics of that if you can as I have never seen palms branching out anywhere but the base.

Hi Guys Phoenix roebelinii multi-heads from time to time - I once saw one only 2m tall with 15 or so heads. It had two or three levels of division. Alpine Treemovals in Sydney had a corker 3m tall x 4m wide with 30 heads approx. It was used in one of the garden expos, but unfortunately died -it was worth $10-20k but even more as a rarity to be admired. I'll see if I can get you a pic. Phoenix are promiscuous, so hybrids with roebelinii may acquire multi-stem genes. I once saw a Cocos with codom trunks - it must have had its growing tip damaged but recovered. Doum palms in Nth Africa branch regularly - its its normal form. But ones like the Washingtonia are just the result of multiple seedlings being planted initially, I think you'll find. Cheers |

If i ever get out to Palm Springs area again, i take some photos (it's about 2000 miles from me) I never could figure out how they branched out off the trunk so high off the ground?
