Default Dendrocnide excelsa

So eager was I to see some stinging trees (at Mount Keira, Wollongong) that I rushed past some nice stands of Eucalyptus botryoides x saligna with barely a glance.

apparently this species produces several hours of intense pain on contact. By all accounts the Queensland species D. moroides causes about six months of stinging and itchy sensations.

Apparently they shed their stinging hairs continously, so they wouldn't be ideal for asthmatic arborists to cut down.

A quick first aid treatment that reduces the irritation (a little) if you brush against one of these stinging trees is to put elastoplast tape or even packing tape over the affected area (yes it hurts) press down firmly (yes hurts some more) then rip off quickly in one motion (yes hurts a lot) this will pull out many, almost but not quite all the stinging cells providing some relief....best to keep a sharp look out if you know you're in an area where they can grow.

Even dead leaves which are shed can still sting.....
There are two trees in a Reserve where I do Bush regeneration which are partially deciduous (pics taken Dec 2007).

Good to know about the tape/bandaid trick Sean...athough Im not offering to be a guinea-pig.

I know that Australians generally like to portray themselves as living the frontier lifestyle, man against nature etc...and this can lead to exageration, however... Dendrocnide

Not a tree to mess with....definately not one to climb!!!!

Dendrocnide is in the same family (URTICACEAE) as:
Asthma Weed/Pellitory Parietaria judaica
and the Stinging Nettles Urtica spp.

A paste of bi-carb soda helps for the nettle stings.... apply thick to area of sting and leave.

I had a client once....he was Yugoslav I believe.... who had a vege. garden full of nettles. Asked why?
He makes a soup....and gave me a bunch to try it out with...It's just a bitter watery clear broth, (no sting)...I wouldnt bother again.

Hi,
All you need to do is press the quote button at the bottom of the post you would like to quote,Then you highlight the information you dont need and delete,to leave the relevent information (quote) to your post.
hope this helps...

I thought you would all say it was a windup,But I seen the recipe they copied from was out of magazine,I'll have to wait for my cous to drop in again to find out if he still has a copy...LOL.. It didn't turn me on,They told me it leaves you a mess the dayafter..LOL.
