Default Attention landscapers: Australian Pine Tree

Introducing what is possibly the world's most beautiful small/medium pine tree:

Daintree Pine - Gymnostoma australianum (in the causaurina family)

Check out this little beauty..natural conical shape no pruning required, no spines or prickles, has an incredible grip on the ground you won't believe it I didn't!!

Grows in full sun, from tropical NQ down to Victoria 0 - 40'C excessive wet and dry! I kid you not!! Has no known pests or diseases Has no need for stakes will ultimately grow to 3 - 6m high

The next time you have someone you know who wants a conifer or similar shaped small medium tree think about this little beauty, it even has flushes of brilliant lime green...loves growing in tubs and pots. It is a relic plant from the past just like the Wallemi pine. It would work as an excellent screening plant, or median strip planting.

It is being grown in commercial quantities by

Mature height in NQ 6m by around 2.5m at the base, in colder climates like Victoria more like 3m X 1.5m. I'd never seen or heard of this tree till I went up to Cairns on Friday, this wasn't even the stock I was assessing, but it just blew me away, why would anyone ever grow another conifer in Oz?

This little tree is quite amazing, the one in the photo is 2m high and I couldn't bend the stem more than 10 degrees from vertical...this is one tough baby. It might take a while to take off, but remember you saw it here first.

And have a look at the tiny place it lives in.

The color sure is nice.

Are you saying that its natural habitat is limited to that one little blip of a spot on the map?

Yeah that's it, that little blip.

Wollemi pine is the same, thought once extinct it was only found some 10 years ago in a remote gorge in the Blue Mountains. Apparently quite a hike and some keen adventurers bush walking found them, didn't recognize the species and had a sample ID'd.
