Default Arb 2, Class 2007 - Mt Wilson

Well as you guys know, I'm currently studying towards my lvl 5. Last weekend, Arb 2 (@ Ryde TAFE) camped at Mt Wilson in the Blue Mountains. Where we stayed (private property) was an old volcano where the top had capped over. With some of the best soil in the world.

We did a range of work on these beautiful magnificant trees. Removed a few (Cypresses) dead limbs, dead leaders, 40 metre tree where the rootplate was lifting. Headed, blocked and bucked some of the old dead cedars and redwoods. We also milled up some of the cedar.

Here are the pics.

This is Baraniko.

That's Baraniko climbing up to set the block so he can lower out that dead piece over the garage.

This is Greg. He removed the head/branches from the Cypress that had its root plate lifting.

That's me, going up my dead Cypress.

This is Tom. A big hats off to Tom, he blocked out two 4 metre chunks, where on one of them the pull line actually snapped. This tree is now down to the lvl of where he is in the picture.

Tree Hugger.

This is where I was coming down, my lines are only 30m and the tree was 40m so I had to retie-in.

Some beautiful slabs we milled up.

The Truck n Chipper cleaning up... Guess what kind of chipper it was?

This Friday is my last Friday for lvl 2 Arb. Can't wait til next year for lvl 3.

Hey, thanks for the pics JohN Dee. I'd love to find a course like that around here somewhere! I'm tempted to come find you next year when your course is running

Hiya Therrin,

The server dumped my other pictures when I was posting so thats why there is only three up atm. I've emailed Eric and hopefully things should be getting sorted asap.

The course was great. Each and everyone of my teachers were more then willing to help out and extend their knowledge.

I met one of the teachers from the Richmond TAFE that offers the exact same course and you know the warming vibe you get when you know the person knows their stuff? Well this guy didn't have it... In my personal opinion Ryde TAFE (Arboriculture) is a premier training/education presinct in NSW to learn at. Pssst... You know what? I also taught them a little bit too and they were more then happy to listen and take in what I had to say.

If you can't find a course in your local area, why not do some international studies? We were a class of about 20-30 and the majority of us got through and passed because the teachers bent over backwards to help everyone...

Yeah nice pics and big day out.

You know, that's real hands on training, the real world.

A lot of our USA friends dont get that sort of training. Over here you do classroom training, theory etc and prac doing tree work in the field.

Some awesome tree work.

So, what did you show them?

Oh, you know....

A long tailed running bowline as a secondary that some top blokes taught me ... You know they had their secondary as you would in the head of the tree around the trunk If you slipped you woulda had to of hoped to snag a stub... for it to catchya... I was amazed that even the well established climbers aswell as the climbers in the companies the boys (students) came from even climbed with that as a secondary (Including up palms)

Showed a few of the boys trunk walking and showed them how to use a figure 8 (rescue) for aerial rescue.

You know, I noticed during the course that even some of the accomplished climbers didn't make the most of the time. What I mean by that is, rather then tying up a limb to save the under-story shrubs (like hey that coulda been a glass roof) they dumped it on them just to get the tree down quicker. Of course they did it behind the teachers back though...

Anyways i'm not being a neg (Negative Person) about that, but I'm trying to point out that anyone that does this course or a course similar, slow down, take your time and learn the best a proper techniques without taking the shortcuts. You're not getting paid to take this day off and come out in the field and learn, so make the most of it when it ISN'T about speed.

FTS or Finest Tree Services. We're only small and stay local. Liverpool and Sutherland areas. Now just stay local in Sutherland/StGeorge area now. Mostly private, mostly repeat or word of mouth. Kept us going this way for 18years now. Never aimed to be the biggest. Flyin below the radar you watch alot of companies come and go!!

Oh kewl, do you guys give away any of your chip? I've got a few people that are interested but it's just to far to take my chip when I have local dumps that are cheaper in fuel.

We're a small tight unit aswell, me and my father JayD running the ship. I know what you're saying. Although I do plan on hopefully being one of the biggest and best well known tree services eventually.

Ah level 2 . How do they run the course down there? First Semester theory Second Semester Practical?

Like I said in my previous posts. If you do do the practical part, make the most of it, don't slum it away as a day that you're not getting paid.

You guys will worry about a *single* day of not getting paid?

I'd kill to be certified right now. That kinda thing actually looks like it'd be fun.

I didn't worry, but others did. My quals will make up for the money lost. But I tell you, once it was over I doubled my weekly turn over I had for the last 6 months.
