Cool. If you guys have been using it a bit, what have you found you'd change about the design to improve it?

If ya just keep adding to 1 post, like reply to your own thread with more pics its easier to follow.

But they are cool pics, so keep em coming!

It doesn't like the big drop loads, which has bent the pig tail lop, needs to be a bit stronger and thicker steel rod pig tail lop.We had to make a steel box to keep it all together(a lot of connecting parts),needs to except more rope sizes (bigger & smaller),but it is still a top unit for raising limbs and pulling trees over, it can be used on different trees instead of being at the base of the drop zone.We have 2 different Units(grcs & Friction Drum) which we select the on the day that we think will work the best. The Friction Drum is very good for big timber drops and rope running,Grcs is best for lifting power, combine the too and it would be a nice unit... 2 for 1.

Sounds like Lewmar and Harken need to come up with a winch for arborists.

The self tailing and two speed idea is great however the bollard shape is the problem ... it is short, curved and bunches/overlaps the rope where as the Hobbs and THS devices have a cylindrical shaped bollard.

Interesting, maybe TM can start a thread and summon the experts for the Tree World version.

You can run braided or 3 strand 14m to 18m,I found that the braided ropes run alot smoother with less tangles.I have some pic of the units to see the differents in the Bollards sizes.Inside the whole middle of the Grcs bollard is the 2 speed drive gear and on the Friction Drum the gear ring is at the base of the bollard so you can get that cylindrical shape.

You boys are outta my league. I do all lowering from up in the tree, aerial rigging. I never get trees as big as the monster where Ace had to extend the semi strap with a chain.

I love these systems and I met Greg Good at a Tree Care convention, but didn't buy a GRCS. I don't think I would have even a tiny bit of influence with other winch/bollard makers.

This stuff is fascinating.

I have spoken to Greg Good and have sent him some pictures of the Grcs in action, he loved the chain extention strap too and said he will send a free 10m strap for us to use, i may admit that we use some of these purpose built tree equipment to their limits ,but you can see why by the size of these trees. It gets the old heart pumping when you are right on the edge, everything has to be spot on and extra cautions taken, the right rope, the right ground crew, the right cuts........etc.Sometimes i do aerial rigging too,but i like the ground crew to do most of the lowering as i can set up the second lowering rope or move to the next limb.Tree Machine we are all in the same league, because we all love doing the same thing each day,a small tree can just be as challenging as a large one. Thanks now,Keep up the good work..........

One thing I did notice using those aluminium drums was the rope ended up a steely colour from the aluminium rubbing off.

Dont know whether that's going to affect things or not.

We have a video of these units being used to the point of destruction, It gives you a better hands on type of approach without actually damaging your own set up. I dont know if your seen it? It's where they bomb out a volvo..very good to watch...I would hate to witness this with my own gear!

Yes i have seen the video before, and we have allready bent the fairlead rods and the base plate in the same spot as the video shows but that was not by timber drops but from lowering whole trees that were hung up.It had only happened once thank god we had two ropes on that sucker.
