Default Warning, dead palms are mush

I've cut a lot of them down, mainly die from lightening strike.

I actually got this one on video.

Around 8mb WMV and 1.35mins

See them all the time here too. I don't think homeowners realize how potentially dangerous they can be when they are dead and left like that. A dead tree can stand for years (not that I'd ever recommend it), but with palms it's a crap shoot. And even when they're mush, they can pack a whallop when they fall.
I especially like when the buds are filled with palm weevils and when the plant is felled, this nasty stank permeates the air and bugs go everywhere. I know I shouldn't, but I like those critters. They're my favorites.

Thats scary stuff. You'd think it'd be ok to climb.. What are the tell tale signs for that sort of decay. We don't get a lot of palms over here, but, it's good to know.

Well, I just know, you cant tell from the ground but you'd soon know if you started climbing and your spikes just went into mush.

Once the head's fallen off you are on race against the clock to get it down ... they rot fast. The outer bark/shell stays in tact looking solid like but inside is just mush.

Check out the monocarpic palm blog, you get some big buggers and the naive wont know what they're up against, experience is the key for this one.

Oh, and it's not really decay, is just dried out as palms are full of water, no heartwood, monocots, big grass!
