I am probably making a fool of myself, but I'll take the chance. Someone encouraged me to enter a video in a contest, which I did. It was public voting for the first prize, and I wondered of course how this was supposed to work. Now it's clear that the guy with the biggest fanclub will win the prize, which is a holiday in Hollywood. It is not important to me to win that prize, and I wondered for a while if I should delete the vid and leave the contest. Not to win is ok, but it is no fun to be on the bottom either. As far as I know, I have no fanclub, and witout one, there will be no chance whatsoever. At last I made up my mind not to put the tail between the legs and leave the competition. So, if someone likes my video "A swan story", I'll be happy to get a vote or two. The contest is on vimeo, and is arranged by the company Magix which makes video and music editing software. It's necessary to join vimeo to vote. Voting period: February. http://tiny.cc/ZevkP A swan story. - MAGIX Video Contest 2009 on Vimeo If you like my video, thanks! I liked it, but where or how do you vote? Also, that camera, seems a beauty, very good clear shots.

I like it, one critque though, I thought the honking from the swans went on for a little to long.... long enough to break the spell of the beuty apart from one small thing. Beutiful photographry. Ekka you have to join to vote theres two membership ones for free join that one and you'll be able to vote.

Thanks for friendly critics, JayD: I think you are right. I used the sound from one shot and duplicated that. It was a problem with background sound form cars and even an aeroplane. So, I found one shot with an even car sound that the Magix software could remove. Thanks for votes. To vote, join vimeo, and click on the heart up right. Numer of "likes" is number of votes. Besides that, vimeo is a really big video forum, anyone who has joined may post own videos and make own group. Perhaps an idea for a TW group? The camera is good, Panasonic NV GS 500, with 3 colour sensors. Leif |

Loved the video. You live in one lovely place there in Norway. Love the swans and the signets when they hatched. How long in all did it take to compile all the video footage?? ![]() ![]() Rob. |

Thank you, Rob. Yes, swans are beautiful birds, and wonderful photo objects. But we have a lot of them, and they may cause some problems. They may be quite agressive, and if you look at the video, you'll se that the shot with the eggs is very short. The swans had left the nest for a short while. I pulled on my waders in a hurry, and rushed out to make some shots when they were away. To film while looking around for agressive nestowners was not easy. The summer records were made during some days in May 2008. To compile the vid didn't take more than a couple of days during my Christmas holidays. I decided to look at those files to see if I could make something interesting out of them, and I got the idea about this family story, with a little bit of humour. I realized soon that I needed someting different to make a good ending, so I made the snow shots. I live only few minutes walk from the locks where the nest is. Nearly by chance I discovered the swans in the river one sunday I was going to make some pics of frosty trees near our church. Then I heard the swan song from the river, and I made the last ones. As JayD says, the swan song is perhaps too long. I am not too happy about some parts of the music. I used a music generator in the Magix software, but I am not too pleased with all of it. I didn't make the video especially for this contest, I didn't even know about it. I posted the video in the Magix users group, and there I was encouraged to enter it in the contest. Calling for votes is not fun, in my age. We are not used to think that way. But now, Iv'e jumped into it. It's new learning! Thanks to everybody. Leif |

So do these birds fly away for winter or somehow avoid freezing?

Swans living further north must leave their summer living place when the water is freezing. They are looking for some place with open water, like here. We have a lot more swans in winter than in summer. Most of the swans in the winterpart of the video come from other places, but the swan family is probably among them too. Swans eat grass under water or in the fields, and farmers are not happy to be visited by a bunch ot them. Among hunters, I have heard discussions about swans eating ducklings, but in this case they were living together in peace. The snake was living few metres from the nest, and that didn't cause any hostilities either. Leif. |

Nice video Job LeifR. I'm sending the link to my daughter she used to raise baby ducklings at home and them we returned them back to the ponds or lakes nearby. |
