Default Veteran Tree Group

Just wanted to point people in the direction of a youtube video channel that I have started up, called Veteran Tree Group;

YouTube - VeteranTreeGroup's Channel

There is no money making involved, it has only just started I will try and load a couple of videos each week and cover various topics of interest relating to our older trees.

Anyway have a look, there is a link to a web/blog site as well.

Sorry, I dont get it. I mean I get veteran trees but I dont get what you're trying to do.

Sean, what is it you are trying to accomplish?

Are you trying to create interest, get a register, educate people about it etc. I'm just not sure what the goal is.

Is there a veteran tree register in Australia or anywhere else?

What qualifies a tree to veteran status, opinion, age, fact, condition etc?

Look fair question Eric, why should any of us care about older trees with visible signs of damage decay etc...

Its sort of being laid out here..Veteran Tree Group

But I'm very happy to talk about it on Tree World, perhaps I should start a thread in General Tree Chat.

It is all of the things you have suggested...raising the profile, developing awareness of their importance to everything else, getting a register started, getting like minded people together.

Here is a simple little video loooking at an exposed root plate, I just love the sheer scale of the buttress roots on Albizia saman

I also tried using the annotations in youtube to make the video a little more accurate.

I suspect council had the area fenced to stop people falling into the eroded gulley.

LOL, that'll stop a lot of people.

I thought it looked like some silt fence or something deteriorated.

I haven't seen any that large here in Brisbane.

Hi Sean

That's great, it should be one of my must see video channels.

Most people feel veteran trees are those old useless trees, we know it is not true. They are still quitely doing their work by providing oxygen, absorbing carbon dioxide from the air, and helping to cool down the temperture from the environment.

Thank you for your good work.

Dear Sean

Thank you for the initiative.

Yes, we should not neglect those old trees which have been serving most of their live in our neighbourhood, there are lot of things we can learn from them.

Please keep it up

Cheers

Sometimes you come across a special place quite unexpectedly, and it makes you feel good inside despite a lot of other stuff that might be going on that makes you feel not so great....

This little hidden gem of a park off Bundall Road is just such a place

But do you think I could just once get away without being attacked nesting birds

It truely is amazing how well tree can grow in ideal conditions...I was in Grafton yesterday trying to catch the last of the Jacaranda Festival, sadly fort he second year the weather had other ideas (a little wet in Nth NSW over the weekend!)

Anyhow......i did get a short vid shot in one of my favourite bits of Grafton, the Fig Tree Avenue.

When I got back to the office did a bit of a search to find out that they were planted in 1939...making them only 70-80yrs old, really remarkable growth for such a short time, fabulous soils along the Clarence Valley.

Very impressive video. Is that one tree, or a whack of them together? Thanks. Bruce.

HI Sean. I'm asking if it was one tree, or a bunch together, in one spot. I understand that it is an avenue, very impressive too. I have never seen trees like this, so that is what I was wondering, about. Thanks. Bruce.

Ficus microcarpa hillii in common with a number of other fig species form aerial (or prop) roots quite readily, they can rapidly form a lower stem architecture that does look like numerous stems grafted together but each of these particular canopies was formed on one original tree stem, with the pillars developing as the tree ages.

The effect is emphasised by the buttressing and fluting associated with the developing enlarging root system.
